Shocking suspension leaves Spartans hurting

07:36 AM ET 12.26 | Michigan State knew it would have a challenge in replacing senior middle linebacker Max Bullough -- just not so soon. [No one] could have known that challenge would confront the Spartans (12-1) in their Jan. 1 Rose Bowl clash with Stanford (11-2). News of Bullough's suspension, released late on Christmas night in Los Angeles and early Thursday morning in the Eastern time zone, is sending shockwaves through the fan base. ... [Mark Dantonio] has said Michigan State will "close ranks" and essentially circle the wagons. The Spartans were already a 5 1/2-point underdog to Pac-12 champion Stanford. There's a good chance that line will increase in the next 24 hours. Losing Bullough puts the team's chances for success in the Rose Bowl further in doubt while putting a dark cloud over what had been a dream season.

Tough loss for the Spartans..........but they pull the up-set.

DS will give us the scoop when he wakes up, you know, around noon or so.

It seems something similar happens every year doesn't it? I'm not saying it happened in this case, but the bowl atmosphere ... with travel, gifts, dinners, promo events ... coming right after final exams ... creates a party atmosphere and some players just cut loose and scroo the pooch.

"EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) Michigan State has suspended senior linebacker Max Bullough for violating team rules, making him ineligible to play in the Rose Bowl.

In a news release sent early Thursday, Spartans coach Mark Dantonio said Bullough had been suspended for the rest of the season. He did not say what rules the two-time team captain violated."

True dat, Doc. But as true as it is, it just doesn't seem to add up for this guy, from all the other info the article has about him. Guess we'll have to chalk it up to a moment of uncharacteristic weakness/poor judgement for the guy.

Sad, no doubt.

Coach Dick Motta had a "wounded tiger" theory that proved itself on many occasions ... when the star player was hurt the rest of the team circled the wagons and elevated their play. Here's hoping the same for Sparty.

Somehow, I just don't see DS as the sleep-til-noon type.

A two-time team captain getting booted before the GrandDaddy of them all??? This guy must have REALLY crapped the bed.

Eggsacktly what I was thinking. Way out of character. This guy is a 3rd generation Spartan. His father and grandfather wore the green and white.

WOW

I don't see it either. Quite the opposite from DS is what I would envision.

Me neither, but yeah to all the picnic baskets in the park. lol

Sparty will beat the Trees like a redheaded step, and show no mercy in doing so, they are far better the best of the two teams. Not even going to be close.

Ha ha, I was up early, but just saw the news. Don't have any info yet, but am sorry to see Bullough end his CFB career this way. Kyle Ellsworth will most likely get the start in his place. Ellsworth is a former walk on, fifth year senior. This is a loss, but not insurmountable.
