$20M not enough to keep Lester?

07:12 AM ET 12.27 | Jon Lester may not be that young anymore, but he's a proven frontline lefty starter -- and that's going to line him up for a significant payday. Perhaps the best comparison is [Cole Hamels], another big-game lefty who's a little bit younger and perhaps a little bit better -- though pitching against National League lineups certainly has helped his numbers. Hamels is in entering the second year of a seven-year, $153 million contract extension with the Philadelphia Phillies. Hamels was 28 years old when he signed his contract. ... Still, if Lester gets to free agency, he's going to command Hamels-esque annual salaries. There's too much demand for starting pitching and too much money in the game for the auction to stall south of $20 million per year -- not when Hamels is getting around $22 million per year.

The way way teams are throwing money around these days Lester will have no problem in landing 20 mill a season or better in a long term contract.

I think a deal will be worked out to the satisfaction of both parties without any of the contentiousness associated with contract negotiations of this scale. Happy, happy.

He will be 30 in two weeks and 31 when his current contract is up. See CC. Lester has thrown around 200 innings for six strait years. 7 year deal seems risky. We shall see.

The team is in a good position on this matter.
They watch his performance this year, and the continuing development of their good minor league pitching. They then go into contract extension discussions with a price and length in mind.
If they and Jon are on the same page they have a deal; if not they've got other ways to fill the pitching staff.
