06:41 AM ET 12.29 | A team source confirmed an ESPN report that the feeling around the Jets on Saturday was that Rex Ryan would return in 2014. Ryan and Idzik met on Friday night. The biggest question is under what conditions would Ryan return. Would he receive a contract extension beyond 2014 or go into the final year of his contract, a rarity in the NFL. There are also questions about his staff. Several assistant coaches??? contracts are up, including defensive coordinator Dennis Thurman, special teams coordinator Ben Kotwica and assistant head coach Anthony Lynn.

A "team source" confirmed a "feeling"?

More hard-hitting journalism from the New York Post, I see.

Haven't the Jets suffered enough. It's getting painful to watch.

its not the coach-
its that management hasn't provided them with a legit franchise level QB in decades.
pennington was decent-but he was a game manager
a 78 year old testaverde ?
you can't win consistently in the league without a legit QB-
no matter who the coach is.

Just out of curiosity, what did you think when Geno Smith was drafted?

being that it was in the 2nd round and he was the top rated qb on the board- I was ok with it.
But I knew he wasn't ready to start- that he'd need a year (at least) of grooming.

also with the new rookie wage scale-
I felt like even if he was a complete bust (jury still out)
that it isn't the same type of investment as you had with the top QBs int he past who were getting tens of mill in guarantees.....so if the jets want to move on-
its no big deal.

To be honest-
I just didn't want to see sanchez in the uni ever again.
and I took this year as an opportunity to evaluate smith- and a transition year out of smith/santonio
no one thought they'd make the playoffs- and smith got a chance to experience his rookie year with no real pressure-

I'm hoping they DON'T take another qb high-
rather they need to go skill position (wr)
if they take a qb in the 3,4 round- fine.

They really need someone for Smith to throw to, that certainly would help.

yup-
they have no one that commands a double team or someone
that you have to at least account for/plan for

I hope they keep Rex and also re-sign Sanchez.

Actually the Post is getting lazier than usual. They are simply quoting yet another lame article by ESPN. Now I'm even more convinced that Rex is gone.

December 29, 2013  09:33 AM ET

Rex Ryan did a very good job with a bad Jets team this year. The Jets would do well to keep him.

Yes it does. Maybe the new GM will have to learn to get along with Rexasaurus.

But not Sanchez.

Somewhere out there is a clipboard with his name on it. Maybe even a headset, too.

December 29, 2013  10:06 AM ET

He has probably told ownership he will fire some of his staff and get rid of the problem for not winning this year and keep his job. Until the Jets get a real QB losing seasons will continue there.

December 29, 2013  10:07 AM ET

Even Mike Tannenbaum thinks the J-E-T-S should keep Rex.

I guess he forgot his "expertise" got him run out of New York.

December 29, 2013  10:09 AM ET

Keeping him or not does not get rid of the elephant in the room. Geno Smith. That is the Jets biggest decision going forward. Me, I draft or bring in a QB. Never would have gone near him to begin with.

He will be out of there soon enough. Geno is the albatross around their neck and Rex has to have offensive personnel and OC decisions just taken out of his job descriptions if they keep him. He has never even developed one offensive talent worth a nickel.

He might keep his job for another year, but that doesn't guarantee an extension. That might scare off some potential assistants, especially if they have a chance to work somewhere else where they have a realistic chance for more than a single season of work.
