06:54 AM ET 12.29 | The Texas coaching search heads into its third week Sunday as new men's athletic director Steve Patterson operates in methodical fashion. A high-ranking UT source said Patterson is spearheading the search alone with help from Jed Hughes, an executive with the search firm Korn/Ferry International. Hughes has vetted about six to eight coaching candidates, the source said. Four names believed to be on that list are Baylor's Art Briles, Florida State's Jimbo Fisher, Louisville's Charlie Strong and Vanderbilt's James Franklin. UT's level of interest in any of those candidates is unknown at this point. Two UT sources have told the American-Statesman previously that nothing may happen until after the bowl season is complete. Two sources, including one connected to Briles, said Briles would take the Texas job if offered. Briles recently signed a new, 10-year contract at Baylor that includes a $4 million buyout, which one high-ranking UT source called "a little daunting." It's believed the new contract pays Briles approximately $4.5 million annually. As a private school, Baylor does not have to disclose financial information. Briles and the Baylor Bears finish their season against Central Florida in the Fiesta Bowl on Wednesday.

He'd be a good choice, local guy with well established relationships with high school coaches across the state. Funny to watch longhorns use word daunting when referring to a $4M buyout after they spent year throwing money around. Maybe they learned.

Translation: Watch the Saban/Malzahn rumors renew on January 7. While Patteson is doing what needs to be done, the folks who think themselves (and UTx) over-important will feel the need to stick their mouths in the media.

Hook him Horns!

He'd be stupid not to take it

Why all the search when the coach that really fits UT's profile, Lane Kiffin, is readily available.

Briles is a fit if you throw out the requirements that come with the LHN and delicate handling of the big money pests that feel they should have a say in running the team because of the size of their contributions.

I just can't see Briles dealing with those two things to the satisfaction of the powers that be in Austin. He's more of a irritant to TV reporters and a "stick it where the sun don't shine" kind of guy to the meddlers. JMO but it would be fun to watch.

Interesting . He may be in the right place right where he is now....

UT going to get their hands dirty if they go with Briles

There's absolutely nothing to suggest he cannot handle those responsibilities. Most point to his handling of reporters with a prickly attitude as evidence he cannot schmooze alum or deal with the responsibilities of the LHN. One does not get the other IMO.

He's one of the most beloved and respected coaches in the State with a fantastic relationship with his peers and has by all accounts been more than able to handle Baylors alums. Doesn't mean he can do it but there's nothing to suggest he cannot. Thats just speculation since no one has seen him in action behind the scenes.

If they'd allow him to be his own man he could definitely do it. If they think he should morph into something he isn't, no way.

I'm a Briles fan because of his West Texas roots so I'm a little biased. But, what evidence is there to suggest he can handle the duties in the way the snub noses at UTx want...besides the way he handled the Baylor alum? Not the same crew IMHO. I do believe he could handle them if allowed to do it his own way. I personally think UTx should hire someone that will stand up to all the crap creators...whether it is done smoothly or not. But, that's just my opinion.

I find the way he handles the media quite good. But I don't like the "polished" crap UTx desires. I also agree he's got the most admiration/best relationship with coaches in the state bar none. Not even a close second. They see hims as one of them...which he was/is. If you can go from places like Rule/Hamlin, TX to the UTx job, you've just about covered the entire spectrum. Definitely earned your stripes. And, it is hard to argue he hasn't done well anywhere he's been.

I am sure Briles will let the UT BOR know in the interview that he will do it his way or stay put

That's why I don't think they'd hire him. That BOR is infused with Rick Perry lackeys and control freaks now.

Not sold on Briles. He has had the one dream season this year, but his prior 5 years at Baylor he is 33-30, with an in conference record of 17-25.

He's certainly a safe choice, given this last year and the fact that he is a native Texan and coached at Baylor and Houston for 11 years (and with that, it's an easy assumption that he has at least an established/successful recruiting system within Texas). Not a lot of strength within the AD, Prez and regents at UT right now, so if Briles doesn't work out, they may feel they won't take a lot of heat for it.
