Dantonio on Texas job: 'I guess you'd consider'

07:31 AM ET 12.30 | The Rose Bowl looms -- then what? Shortly after his name appeared on a USA Today list of possible candidates for the vacant Texas job, Mark Dantonio said he was "flattered" and that he considers Michigan State a coaching "destination, not a stop." He did not say he wouldn't listen to overtures from such a program. "I guess you'd consider," Dantonio said later in an interview with the Free Press. "But it'd be very difficult to do. I mean, there are certain things at every school or every place that you're at -- do you have all the advantages? No. I don't know if there is a place like that." But Texas would be right around the top of the list of places with all the advantages, right? "It would be." ... There's no indication the Texas search to replace Mack Brown, which has been a quiet one so far, will involve any consideration of Dantonio. But there's no question he's a hot name.

A lot more politics with the Texas job. Dantonio probably has as a secure a position as he could ever get where he is, and security of employment is a big thing for many people.

How old is Dantonio? and hasn't he had heart issues?

You brought to mind lines from Jerry Maguire, "Heart? I'm all heart, ************!"

Dantonio is 57 years old, so GR, you and I'll agree that he's a young man. ;-). He had a mild heart attack after the "Little Giants" fake field goal win over Notre Dame. Since then, he has followed a strict cardiac friendly diet and daily exercise. Reading the entire article, you get the impression that while he's flattered to be mentioned for a gig like Texas, he really likes his situation at MSU. Dantonio knows he is in position to be one of the great coaches at MSU. I think he likes the idea of building a legacy. Go Green, beat Stanford.

I love how there isn't a peep out of Austin, just sources that claim things. With that Im sure every coach is on the radar, until something comes out of Austin. So until then everything is speculation.

I think I like your definition of young. How far up the scale does "young" go in your definition?

Since the Texas Legislature isn't in session, at least there is a slight chance something intelligent will come out of Austin....t least until they gather back up.

About 5 years higher than whatever his current age is.

December 30, 2013  09:51 AM ET

I don't think he's going to stay awake at night wondering.

Man, step away for a few minutes and the entire peanut gallery shows up. To respond to all the smart aleck remarks, a young man is anyone younger or the same age as me. Most of you do not qualify, but I remember this conversation with GR earlier this year, and know that he is, by my definition, a young man.

This is my take too. I think he is more interested in his legacy and security than he is in the $$$. That said he may parlay the Texas job for a better deal at MSU but I too do not see him leaving.
