Concerns over Tanaka pitch counts

07:32 AM ET 12.31 | Masahiro Tanaka, according to pitch counts, has more than a few miles on that prized right arm of his. There were the 742 pitches Tanaka threw over six starts in a two-week span as a 17-year-old at the national high school baseball tournament. And the back-to-back 137- and 142-pitch starts at 20 years old. The coup de grace came during the Japan Series this season, in which Tanaka went 160 pitches during a Game 6 loss, then came back the next day and threw another 15 in relief to close out Rakuten's championship victory. Lauded in Japan for his courage and tenacity, Tanaka came off to judicious front offices as reckless. "It worries me a lot," one NL executive said. "Not ideal," one general manager said. "There is definitely reason for concern," another GM said.

Gotta love the reporting. For the last couple weeks it's been reported teams were climbing all over each other to sign this guy. Now, "There is definitely reason for concern."

If there is any relationship between pitch counts and a pitchers health , it has not been proven. Quite the opposite may be true. More pitching injuries with pitch counts than there ever were before....It is not how many times you throw a baseball, it HOW you throw a baseball. Jeesh!

Tanaka also pitched in the Koshien high school baseball tournament, throwing something like 12 innings and 7 innings of relief (!) on consecutive days. I'm not sure how long the tournament lasts, but he pitched almost 53 innings in it and broke Dice-K's HS strikeout record in the process (we all know what happened to his arm).
Koshien is a huge deal in Japan (kind of like the NCAA hoops tournament here) and pitchers are worked unbelievably hard.

as a GM you should be prepare and ready to take the higher's and lower risk, should the pitcher wins 30 games and lose none?
should the pitcher blow away a arm at the last game of the season?
now things could happen without any hesitation, but the long term contract most be signed up, then
deal with the outcome,

That said, about a dozen teams are willing to crack open the checkbook and write this guy a check with a bunch of zeroes.

the difference here with this pitcher/player,,,he its a young fellow and is healthy in the moment that any team make business with him,if the goods are damage after the sell its complete there is nothing any GM can do about it!!
