A Yankees selloff?

07:33 AM ET 12.31 | Just how low can they go? If the Yankees sign Masahiro Tanaka -- as they badly want to do -- then they would all but eliminate any chance of getting under the $189 million luxury threshold. At least to begin the season. But keep in mind, it is where you finish, not where you start. So, in theory, the Yanks can use the opening months of the 2014 season to see if they are contenders and, if not, attempt a massive summer sell-off to attempt to revive their farm system and go under the threshold by season's end. Two huge items complicate even trying this: 1. It still cannot happen without Alex Rodriguez's suspension being for at least 150 games, if not all of 2014. 2. Is it in the Yankees' DNA to ever surrender on a season?

Wait, who are they going to "sell off"? I don't think teams are lining up for Vernon Wells, Soriano, Ichiro, Teixeria or A-Rod. They might get something to help the farm for Sabathia if he reverts back to 2012 form but heavy players over 32 generally don't.

They would still have to eat a majority of those contracts to trade someone. Probably not worth it. The biggest problem they have is not knowing about A-Rod. This "arbitration" was supposed to last 2 months but has dragged on until at least well into January. His lawyers have already said they will challenge the ruling in court. What was the point of this arbitration if it isn't going to be binding and why not just start in court in the first place since the arbitration decision will clearly not have any teeth.

.....yankers are in deep do do...teams like rangers and now red sux r drivin up the price of the overhyped tanaka just to make it hurt more....yankers are like the cowboys....two once proud franchises in decline that still make headlines, but should not......

The a roid hater in me wants him suspended for 200+ games, while the Yankee hater wants him on the field aging rapidly before my eyes and eating >$20 million in salary.
Guess it's good either way.

It's like they are a team with no plan. They didn't sign/re-sign guys last season because they wanted to get under $189 million for 2014. That's fine. Then this offseason they dump a boatload of money, much of it in contracts that are too big for players with questions. Only they didn't get any pitching. Now they want to get Tanaka and discover they spent too much money. Really? Does anyone over there have a calculator?

And who the h*ll are the Yankees going to dump on a team with bloated contracts for old players?

Last year was the first time in something like 15 seasons that the Yankees missed the playoffs. They won the World Series in 2009 and haven't been .500 or less in essentially forever. I'd hardly compare them to the Cowboys.

To cut back on costs, they bought one of those cheap calculators on eBay from China. Maths are hard.

If they want to eat half the contract, I'm sure Boston will take Ellsbury back.

Actually, they missed it in 2008.

Fail.

The Yankees won the World Series in 2009, and made the playoffs in something like 13 of the last 15 years. So while the immediate future may look bleak, please don't compare the Yankees to the Cowboys, who have all of one playoff win since 1996, during which time the Yankees have won 5 World Series titles.

Exactly, they can afford the Luxury Tax better than any other team--it's small change to the Yankers.

I just hope if they go over 189mil, they do it for someone who pitches like Darvish rather than Irabu.
