07:22 AM ET 12.31 | Perhaps only a matter of minutes elapsed between the time Greg Schiano was ousted and ex-Bears coach Lovie Smith emerged as an early favorite to take over the Buccaneers. League executives informed of the Bucs process have told NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport that there is talk of bringing together the old Tampa Bay group, including former Bears general manager Jerry Angelo, former Seahawks general manager Tim Ruskell and others. ... Although Smith, Angelo and Ruskell have an almost impeccable record of building stout defenses, it should be noted that they have demonstrated an utter inability to unearth a true franchise quarterback across nearly two decades with the Bucs and Bears. To that end, sources close to Smith have told Rapoport that the plan is to bring in former Cal head coach Jeff Tedford as offensive coordinator.

Sounds pretty good for Tampa until you get to Jerry Angelo being mentioned as a potential GM. Although, cheap owners like the Glazers might think he's great.

An OK QB record but certainly not the QB guru he is made out to be. I'm just amazed Lovie would come up with this idea on his own. Here are some of Tedfords more prominent college QB's:

Trent Dilfer
David Carr
Akili Smith
Joey Harrington
Kyle Boller
Aaron Rodgers
Billy Volek

Can't win 'em all, I guess.

He was Tampa's director of player personnel for a stretch up until 2000. Kinda ironic when considering his track record with first-round picks in Chicago.

Tedford is still better than any options that would include Ron Turner, Mike Martz or Mike Tice.

well, yeah, almost anyone is better than that bunch. Not exactly Murderer's Row for the Bear's offense. I just wonder how he came up with Tedford. I don't see any coaching stops where they would have spent time together. At least he's trying to start out with the idea of having a viable offense.

They were pretty successful while he was with Tampa.

The only thing I can think of is Tedford's connection to Aaron Rodgers, which is really a reach, I'll admit. Lovie had a decent record against the Packers until Rodgers became their starter.

Considering how Lovie thinks about the offense, that would probably make sense to Lovie.

If the Glazers are getting the old gang back together from the late 90s, why not?

December 31, 2013  09:14 AM ET

They could get 2 Kiffins for the price of 1. What a deal!

Monty was great for the Bucs, but he also had serious taalent to work with. Sapp, Brooks, Lynch, Barber and Rice made his job a lot easier. I think it's time for Monty to retire.

The Glazier's cheapness is part of the problem. They need to take some of the money they spend on ManU and spend it on the Bucs.

I can't imagine any one dumb enough to sign Lane Kiffin. Oh wait, Danny Snyder still owns the Deadskins.

Never mind.

Happy New Year Boys and Girls, it's my humble opionon that, Lovie Should go to Detroit, they already have a Quarterback, and he can help tighten up that loose defense!!!

It isn't like ManU is doing anything to warrant spending over there.
