07:23 AM ET 12.31 | Credit defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson for his self-confidence. According to [Richardson], there's only one logical choice for defensive rookie of the year: himself. "Most definitely," the Jets defensive tackle said Monday as he and his teammates cleaned out their lockers after Sunday's win over the Dolphins in the regular-season finale. "It's not even a question." Richardson -- the star of general manager John Idzik's inaugural draft class -- finished fourth in the NFL among defensive linemen with 77 total tackles and had 3 1/2 sacks. He also had two rushing touchdowns, the most for a defensive lineman in a season since the Bears' William "Refrigerator" Perry in 1985, according to ESPN Stats and Information. "I am the defensive rookie of the year," he said. "That's just how I feel."

I agree.

'self praise is no praise'.

You're still going home.

December 31, 2013  08:33 AM ET

Me me me ... Not a good start to a promising career.

I mean out of all the Jets faults/reasons for not making the playoffs
you're reaching about a rookie D lineman being a cause
-just sayin.

Looking at his stats, he has a point.

December 31, 2013  09:04 AM ET

If it is a case he was asked a question and answered it, then nothing wrong with it. He may be right.

What is he supposed to say, the usual false humility BS? Do the old religion thing and say that is up to the Big Guy in the Sky?

December 31, 2013  09:12 AM ET

Looks as if his HC's ego has rubbed off on him.

December 31, 2013  09:13 AM ET

I guess it can't hurt but do 2 rushing TD's count for a defensive award?

He has been touched by His noodley appendages. Ramen.

I love this kid.... Him and Milliner along with Wilkerson are a nice young core for that defense.

December 31, 2013  09:16 AM ET

Happy New Year, Girls and Boys!!! The guy is right, but he needs someone else to say it!!!

I don't think he's implying that Richardson is a cause...just that despite being a good player, his team is ****.

Eggzactly...

I'd vote for Buffalo's MLB Kiko Alonso

159 tackles (87 solo, 72 assists)
2 sacks
9 pass deflections
4 interceptions
1 forced fumble
2 fumble recoveries

His numbers are comparable to, if not better than, Luke Keuchly's. And Keuchly has been mentioned in the running for (non-rookie) defensive player of the year.

Now head down to the store and buy yourself a trophy. Pick up some some humility while yer at it!

Don't bother us with facts. If you want to use stats, Richardson had 3.5 sacks, not to mention 77 tackles!

Wait, is 77<<<159?

Errr, nevermind.

MLB's always lead the pack in tackles.

but that is even more of a stupid comment then
as the jets parlayed a raw rookie Qb + zero skill position
into a season which they OVER achieved -
people thought they'd win like 2-3 games-
but they actually were ONE game out of a playoff spot

So be fair
the texans suck, the falcons suck, the raiders suck, the browns suck
the jets were a 500 team.
