07:28 AM ET 12.31 | In the end, point guard Chris Smith became the odd man out. The Knicks have made the decision to waive [Smith] to make room for big man Jeremy Tyler on the team's 15-man roster, according to a source close to the situation. J.R. Smith, Chris's older brother, didn't seem too pleased by the move. On Monday afternoon, he posted a picture on his Instagram account of Robert DeNiro staring disconcertingly at Sharon Stone in a scene from the film, "Casino" with the caption: "You know the sad thing about betrayal? It never comes from an enemy." Presumably, this was his response to the news of his brother getting cut. Chris's contract of $491,000 was a source of curiosity to some after it became guaranteed when he made the opening night roster amid charges of nepotism.

Perhaps JR wants the Knicks to hire his entire family?

December 31, 2013  08:16 AM ET

Betrayal, huh? Players always say it's a business when they sign huge contracts. Now that his bro gets cut it becomes personal? Can't have it both ways.

This just shows who's in charge of the Knicks. JR made the decisions on who plays for the Knicks and now he felt betrayed because management went against his decision....lol

****...he is delusional....sorry JR ( turd for jgb)...you have absolutely zero clout here...your game is on the side of a milk carton, and when I read what this idjut wrote on his twitter this morning I was incensed....this idjut is lucky he has a job...send him to the D league

you are strong with the dark side........

soon you will join me on the nomad express

He Sucks And So Do You, Bro.

December 31, 2013  09:18 AM ET

JR Smith needs to S-T-F-Up man..... I wouldn't be surprised if he isn't on the trade block also. Not that any team in their right minds would trade for this head case.

December 31, 2013  09:30 AM ET

Everybody with a half a brain knew signing his bro was a bad idea from day 1, now the Knicks have to reap what they sow.......

Maybe in his mind, they were obligated to do just that.....

Improving the team by removing dead weight to sign a 7 footer? Who does jr smith think he is? I understand sticking up for your little brother but this isn't like normal businesses, there's only so much room and money teams have. Jr better just feel blessed they cut his brother and not his worthless behind

Actually......this is like "normal" business.

In the real world, those who are not best able to help a business/organization are let go in favor of those who ARE best able to help a business/organization.

That's the way it is.......

Chris Smith got paid. If he has half of the talent that his brother thinks he has another team will pick him up. If not, then he was not NBA material to begin with.

The Lakers and Cavs are discussing a deal, Gasol for Bynum. They'd have to add players and picks. The Lakers would then waive Bynum, it would save them close to 20 million over the next few seasons.

"The Los Angeles Lakers and Cleveland Cavaliers have had discussions on a trade that would involve Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum, league sources told ESPN.com.

No deal is believed to be imminent, but both sides are mulling it over ahead of a Jan. 7 deadline when the second half of Bynum's $12.25 million salary would be guaranteed. The Cavs suspended Bynum for one game this weekend for conduct detrimental to the team and have excused him indefinitely from all activities, including games.

By trading Gasol in a package for Bynum and then waiving him, the injury-ravaged Lakers could save more than $20 million in salaries and luxury taxes, which could help them maintain financial flexibility heading into the next few summers. A Gasol-Bynum trade would have to include at least one other player and perhaps other assets from Cleveland.

The Lakers and Cavaliers are weighing whether to flip Andrew Bynum, left, for former Lakers teammate Pau Gasol.

The Lakers are reluctant to part with the four-time All-Star in any trade without receiving assets of some value in return, sources said."

As long as they waive Bynum but the Lakers should try to get assets trading for Pau. Doesn't seem to be a smart move IMO if it happens.

huh?

I don't get it-
pau is a FA after this year-
how does this move help them from a basketball perspective?

sure- they'd save some $ this year.
but they already were willing to spend the $

if they move pau- they should be getting PLAYERS or picks back
not a guy they are going to cut

God it's ridiculous how teams bail the Lakers out as soon as they get on the verge of financial ruin.
