07:38 AM ET 12.31 | Save the date? University of Texas men's athletic director Steve Patterson expects to have a new football coach in place before the end of the NCAA dead period on Jan. 15. "We've got to be back open for business in the middle of the month once the dead period ends, so we need to get it done before then," Patterson said. "The coach has to put together a staff and be up and running, making sure we keep the recruits we got in the spots we've got." ... Patterson said several coaches have expressed interest in the job, but would not get into specifics as to who is being considered or how the process is playing out. Asked if they are going through a formal application process, Patterson joked by saying: "The guys we're talking to are not filling out applications."

Somehow I don't think the high-ranking names they're throwing around are going to be the ones that end up with the UTx job

Everyone have a Happy New Years!

From a recruiting standpoint I hate to see Larry Porter and Major Applewhite go elsewhere.

December 31, 2013  08:57 AM ET

New guy should have already been named. Gives him time to get the staff in place to help secure the recruiting class.

Good luck to Mack in the future. Went out with class and much admiration from the fan base....good to see last night.

From a game-standpoint......Oregon only had 1 offensive TD. Good game plan by UTx, just no offense and lousy QB play. Texas should have better skill positions, ALWAYS.

That'd be my guess as well when all things are considered.

Whatever happened to the yapping that Texas would get a big name HC that had already won a NC?

Well tbh, ESPN and the Dallas Morning News reported that list..

So I would take it with a grain of salt... I doubt they advertise who they are really after

What, are you Backroads' understudy now?

The "yapping" was the new Texas AD disclosing that the university would be seeking a coach with extensive college head coaching experience. It was nice way to say they wouldn't be pursuing NFL coaches or college assistant coaches.

1. I'm so proud of him....

2. IIRC, that is what everyone was saying when this all started...TU would get who they wanted and they wanted the best with experience and NC resume...

Hell no. Our Backroads are paved and I was raised better 'n Lovington, NM! :)

And I understood the "extensive college head coaching experience" meant NC(s) and CCs. Guess I misunderstood.

Of course they will get who they want. There are NFL coaches lining up to abandon their SB contenders and coach in Austin. C'mon, man.

He had no intention of leaving (for the 2nd time first being after 2009 when WM was to take over for 2010) He was forced out. ESPN spins everything college football.
