Suns GM on keeping Bledsoe: 'Whatever it takes'

07:28 AM ET 01.01 | So far, so good for Eric Bledsoe in Phoenix. "What he's done so far is what we thought he could do," [Suns GM Ryan McDonough] said. But they just didn't know for sure. That's why when it came time to lock Bledsoe into a contract extension, the Oct. 31 deadline passed without a resolution, making Bledsoe a restricted free agent this summer. "Sometimes that works out and both parties think it's a good deal for them. Other times it doesn't," McDonough said. "Obviously we don't have a whole lot of money committed for the future, we don't have a lot of long-term contracts on our books. So we'll have no problem stepping up and paying Eric whatever it takes to keep him." Whatever it takes? "Correct," McDonough said. "Any reasonable offer."

He is restricted so he is pretty much coming back.....They will match any offer for the guy...

yup-
I still think it was the smart move NOT to just pay him before they had a chance to watch him play
it may cost them a few more mil per year-
but it is better than getting stuck with a big contract and he stunk

Bledsoe will be making 4yr ~43million something like that. He progressed much faster than I thought. Very good in the pick and role which he didn't show too much in LAC.

But would you pay him max if that's what it takes to keep him? It contradicts whatever you were saying so many times and I pretty much agree w/ you. You don't pay 2nd tier players max money. He is good but he is not a superstar.

I would pay what the market dictates-
they shouldn't offer him a deal- just match

My thoughts on the max deal on this RFA contract is a bit different than one when you are at the next one. Some teams need to over-spend to keep whatever talent they can.
Phoenix currently has no one....so if they spend 13-14 on bledsoe-
its not like NY spending 20 on amare

The Clippers got porked!!!!

Not at all.

With CP3 on board, the Clippers 'shopped' Bledsoe. They had a choice.....keep an underutilized, 'starting' (quality) PG as a backup to their star point guard (and Bledsoe become an attitude problem).....or.....trade him for whatever assets they could acquire.

Kinda the same situation with Houston, where they have an underutilized 'starting' center (Asik) playing behind the recently signed D.Howard.

The Clippers handled the situation correctly; Houston? Not so much.

BTW, the Clippers ended up with two starters (Jared Dudley and J.J. Reddick).....so not really that bad of a deal for them
