07:07 AM ET 01.02 | If change looms in South Florida, it may be drastic. [Owner] Stephen Ross has been meeting with his top advisers before deciding whether to fire anyone, two people familiar with the situation said. One of the people said the meetings began Sunday night and will resume Thursday, and a decision could come then. That person said that during the Dolphins' loss Sunday to the New York Jets, Ross became so upset he turned away at one point because he could no longer watch. ... Second-year offensive coordinator Mike Sherman is considered the most likely to be fired, and sixth-year general manager Jeff Ireland's job is also in serious jeopardy. Coach Joe Philbin is likely to return for a third season, the two people familiar with the situation said, but that's not a certainty.

The Dolphins haven't won during Ross' ownership, despite changes in GMs and HCs.
At what point does the owner look in the mirror, hire a GM with credentials after agreeing on goals, and then stay out of football decisions?

Hmmm, Mike Shanahan needs to work on his tan. Sounds like a good fit to me. Jim Schwartz can be his DC.

I love it when a plan comes together. Go Fins!!

Depends on the mirror (see Jerry Jones).

Ross and Jones are to NFL team leadership what Hitler and Mussolini were to Europe.

He's actually not a horrible owner. How many franchises have elite GMs? They dont grow on trees. At least he sticks to the business end. The owner who does less, does more.

Ouch!

Philbin isn't the problem. I am happy to have him one more year to see if we continue to improve.

If we shore up the O-line and keep Tannehill upright, they are a playoff team.

Gotta get rid of Ireland and Sherman though.

Whattheffff? He is meeting with his " Top Advisors?" Are they not the ones who advised him in to the position he has been in for a long long time? He should meet with someone else's top advisors....

No. It's a group he brought together when the Incognito mess went down.

Every time Jerry looks in his mirror he asks: "Mirror, Mirror on the wall who is the greatest owner and GM of them all?".........I think he must have stolen his mirror from a certain Disney movie.

A long time? He's owned the team for like 7-8 years. He kept Parcells around when he bought the team. Parcells brought in Ireland. So what situation did HE put the team in? He largely stays away and let the football team run the business. He just needs to find the right GM.

Spoken by someone who doesn't have the first idea what is going on with this team. Ross bought the team from H. Wayne, and Parcells (The Legend?) used that to exercise a $4 million option to leave should the team be sold. Ireland and the football people have been in charge since and Ross has NOT meddled. At all.

Absolutely correct.

It will be tough for Philbin to pull the plug on Sherman as they go all the way back to Philbin's prep school days where Sherman was an assistant.

Yeah I know - his hand might be forced though.

Ross is rather miffed these days.

January 2, 2014  09:52 AM ET

It will be a hard choice. No one really expected the Dolphins to be a great team this year, but the last 2 games with the playoffs on the line probably will seal the fate of more than a few. Their FA LB's were a big bust and they need a better OL. They have the pieces, they have the technology, they can rebuild it.

January 2, 2014  09:52 AM ET

At least he is disgusted which is more than I can say about Jerry Jones who is too dumb to know better.

"sixth-year general manager Jeff Ireland"

This quote says it all, really. It is absolutely nuts that Ireland has kept his job for *six* years. Wonder why the Dolphins can't improve? Look no further.
