Middlebrooks safe in Boston?

07:17 AM ET 01.02 | At about this time last year, the left side of Boston's infield appeared to be set with Jose Iglesias at shortstop and Will Middlebrooks at third. And then the Red Sox signed Stephen Drew. A little more than a year later, the left side of the Boston infield looks set. Middlebrooks again will play third base, and with Iglesias traded away last summer, the talented Xander Bogaerts will play shortstop. A compensatory draft pick even awaits the Red Sox when Drew signs elsewhere. And yet the Red Sox still might sign Drew. ... [In] the same way the Red Sox declined to trade Iglesias even with Drew in place a year ago, it shouldn't be surprising if they sign Drew and retain Middlebrooks. Barring a surprising trade offer, Boston would be better positioned to repeat as World Series champions with Middlebrooks and Drew.

This is getting repetitive; until he shows he can hit MLB pitching, Middlebrooks is a project and not a permanent 3rd baseman for the BoSox.

He has defenitly shown he can hit MLB pitching, just not consistently.

Drew will be the starting ss for the champs on opening day and Middlebrooks could end up in Miami as the Fish are looking for a third baseman.

Hehehe.I just think that repeating at all in the MLB is difficult, and even more so from the AL East. Further, as we've discussed, I think they got some surprise performances from some players last season than I don't think will be duplicated, and they lost Ellsbury.I'm not predicting that they're going to miss the playoffs, but if someone held a gun to my head and said I had to bet on them missing the postseason, or repeating as champs, I'd bet on missing the postseason.

It is tough to repeat, and they are in a tough position, but there's no reason they shouldn't be right in the mix. There were really not a lot of guys who had career years last year, other than Victorino and Uehara. But the clutch hitting will be hard to repeat.

Actually, he been very consistent. His pattern hasn't been hot streaks and slumps. He first couple of months were very good. He hasn't done a thing since. He's been consistently awful.
