Leafs looking at another suspension?

07:30 AM ET 01.02 | Considering the spotlight shining on Jan. 1, Joffrey Lupul might have picked the wrong game to cross-check Patrick Eaves in the head. It's expected the NHL will take a look at the Leafs winger's hit on Eaves, which knocked him out of the Winter Classic in front of a six-figure crowd and a global TV audience. Lupul was suspended for two games last season for a head shot on Victor Hedman of the Tampa Bay Lightning. Eaves was down on one knee and looking away in a corner scrum in the first period when Lupul turned and applied his stick towards his face and neck, "I don't know," Lupul said of him possibly getting a call from Brendan Shanahan. ... The Leafs play the New York Rangers on Saturday. Leafs already suspended by the NHL this year include David Clarkson, Phil Kessel, Dion Phaneuf and Nazem Kadri

That was a deliberate act, albeit in retaliation for a missed call, that deserves a suspension.

He's a repeat offender too. Should get the book at him. Enough's enough.

Great idea! After Lupul gets what's coming to him, my first choice for a Leaf suspension is Mrs. Pinch. Let the games begin!

Actually, I think Lupul had a plan all along. He's already played 2 or 3 games in a row and just needed a rest. He couldn't injure himself so the next best option was to let Shanahan give him some time off.

Haven't seen the hit, but based on the description I'd say no less than 5 is due and possibly up to 8. Shanny will probably give him 2 cuz he's an idjit.

"Applied his stick to the face and neck". I do that every morning with my razor, but I don't go whining to Shanny to suspend Gillette.

I watched the game and did not see the hit either. I will reserve comment until I see the play.

Personally, I think the whole TOR team (except for JVR) should be suspended for making Jimmy Howard look like a real NHL goalie.

He tried to decapitate Eaves.

And it took awhile for Eaves to get up after that. I didn't notice if he returned or not.

Toronto has lost a total of 19 games due to suspension. Compare that to B****n's 15 and Pittsburgh's 10.

I watched a lot of it, it was kind of fun.
And Datsyuk is something else. That S/O goal...in those conditions...nicely done...

January 2, 2014  09:55 AM ET

Instead of hurting himself for a change he hurt his team.

It was like pond hockey out there.

January 2, 2014  10:34 AM ET

To hurt Toronto they should make the team give Clarkson more minutes.

Wrong guy too. Another Wing (Kindl maybe?) blasted Lupul, then Lupul found the nearest guy on his knees.

Nope, he did not. Somehow he got concusion like sypmtoms out there. What's his problem? I saw the likes of Larry Murphy and Darren McCarty skating without helmets in the alumni game and they didn't get concusions.

I doubt if they took a hard crosscheck to the side of the head and face.

Unfortunately I think the others saw how easy Dats was making the puck move around out there and they tried putting moves on Bernier. Most times you try to emulate Dats it doesn't turn out well. Toronto shooter did the right thing and shot...though I don't think Bernier was giving up the five-hole like Howard was (I think he was scared of falling down).

Not sure about that, but I'm sure the compete level and physical nature were the same for both games.
