Judgment day still looms for Dolphins

07:23 AM ET 01.03 | Poof -- he was gone, but GM Jeff Ireland and head coach Joe Philbin remained. [Seven] hours after he arrived at Dolphins camp in his helicopter on what was expected to be an axe-wielding mission, Dolphins owner Stephen Ross fired up his flying machine and left. The helicopter was apparently the only thing Ross fired (up). No one was let go -- people at Dolphins camp exhale -- as today was apparently more a fact finding day. ... This isn't about reliving the season, folks. Ross saw the games. I assume he wanted to get the why and not so much the what out of Ireland and Philbin. And I assume he asked for their contingency plans for getting the team in the playoffs in 2014. Both Ireland and Philbin obviously survived a potential judgment day. But this is not yet settled.

What kind of magic plan could they have to get into the 2014 playoffs? 2015 playoffs, maybe.

The legal aspect is still to come.

That must be it. For the sake of the football team and all the staff that won't get big payouts when they lose their jobs if Philbin and/or Ireland get axed, Ross needs to make a decision here.

He's getting his ducks in a row and loading the shotgun..

I think one thing the organization realize that they cannot win with Tannehill as their QB. It look like in the last two games the players quit on their coaches and each other.

This sounds like a disorganized mess thanks to the owner.

January 3, 2014  09:48 AM ET

He's got a Management Mess on his Hands, they were a much better team than the results showed, the GM and Coach cost them a shot at the playoffs and wasted his money, they deserve to to be axed!!!!!

...fired up his flying machine...

Sounds pretty slick and exotic.

Aren't they already in hell?

January 3, 2014  11:35 AM ET

It's smart for a CEO/ owner to take time to gather information before making BIG decisions.
BUT, when it goes on for weeks and the staff and players are holding their breath it becomes indecision, and that destroys the organization.
Ross has to act soon, give clear direction to his people, fire or not, or he will demoralize the team.

In all fairness, this time last Sunday he was probably figuring out how to reward these same people for making the playoffs. All they had to do was beat the Jest, but they came up short.
