D-backs' No. 1 target: Tanaka

07:36 AM ET 01.03 | With all the big-market teams that might take a swing at bidding for Japanese righty Masahiro Tanaka, perhaps there is another team worth watching. The Arizona Diamondbacks cannot be ruled out as major players for [Tanaka], not after giving serious consideration to free-agent outfielder Shin-Soo Choo. ... The Diamondbacks, facing fierce competition, could opt to make a pre-emptive strike and sign a major league free agent such as righty Matt Garza for less money. Tanaka, however, remains the D-backs' No. 1 target. Club officials do not expect to meet with him in Japan; the pitcher's agent, Casey Close, is discouraging such visits, sources said. But at this point, the D-backs expect to stay involved in the bidding, according to sources.

In the end I think the team that thinks it has won the big prize in Tanaka will regret it in no more than two years down the road with a worn out arm.

No chance they outspend the Yanks.

Will be interesting to see just how bad the Yankees want this guy. Do they have a limit? Or will they just wait and top the highest bidder, whatever it is.

If I we're them I'd talk to Johan Santana!!!!

The Yankees absolutely need this guy for any shot at contending. With him, he pushes CC to revert to old form or become #2, Kuroda a solid #3, then Nova and combination of Pineda, Banuelos or Phelps as #5.

Yankees are still going to deal Gardner and a top prospect for another quality arm (Homer Bailey?). Then, they are right back in the thick of things. They wouldn't have signed Ellsbury and Beltran, McCann if they didn't want to bounce back into contention. No way they get outbid for a 25 year old with ace-stuff. No way.

Drive that price up!

Homer gets paid too much now and is not happy with hat. contract says he is staying right where he is. I would trade gardener in a nano second for any number of things. He is out of there next year as free agent.

They said Dice K had ace stuff as well.............buyer beware.

Garza will get rich from the Tanaka loser.

You're not kidding. I'll bet he gets a ridiculous contract. Once Tanaka comes off the board, I think some team in need of SP will panic and overpay him.

I think Garza would look fabulous in a Sox uniform.

Yep. Is he the next coming of Dice-K or Darvish?

With his repertoire, I have to imagine he's at least a solid #2.

Pun fully intended.

Perhaps Tanaka doesn't want to go to NY.

Perhaps but I'm sure the Yanks will give him an extra couple million reasons to don the pinstripes.
