12:40 PM ET 01.04 | There is a real chance that the New York Knicks will watch star small forward Carmelo Anthony leave in free agency this offseason, so they could be looking to swing a deal before the trade deadline that would allow the team to get something in return. One of those options for the Knicks appears to be trading Anthony to the Los Angeles Clippers in a big deal that would bring Blake Griffin to the Big Apple. The deal has reportedly been discussed internally, but there is no guarantee that anything will come to fruition.

The Clips would jump at that deal and Melo would give them a legitimate go-to guy.

That trade will ensure the Clippers qualification for the lottery draft.

No......it won't.

Melo with chris paul would be lethal.... sans injury.

This would definitely shorten the Clippers' contention window. This would be an All In move, and one I would not personally endorse.

What's the big idea of an "internal" discussion? If you want to propose a trade, talk to the team concerned, then it's news!
Internally, the Hawks have been salivating to have a shot at Michael Jordan still.

Melo is the worst player in the league. He plays no D and is a ball stopper. Not many stars what to play with him, whereas they take pay cuts to play with Lebron. He is good enough to get you a 3-6 seed which gets you nonwhere in the NBA. You want to be great or terrible and he keeps you in between.

there is really no need to have a "window" when the clippers dont have a team that can win it all anyway..... yes the major players on the team would have less prime years but a better chance to win it all. isnt that the goal anyway? sterling doesn't have the stones to pull this off anyway.

you definitely dont know basketball.... players dont take pay cut to play with a guy but to win a ring. if lebron was on a team incapable of winning it all he would be in the same position Melo is in. Melo is one of the top players in the league so dont let being on the Knicks fool you.

January 5, 2014  08:31 AM ET

matter of fact... as reported, lebron could not get bosh to some to cleveland with him so THAT was one of the biggest reasons why he left for miami. and all these later it was the best decision he could have made. cleveland messed up the #1 overall pick badly.

Congratulations. You win the prize for the dumbest statement on FN so far this year. But never let it be said that you are one to rest on your laurels. I'm sure you'll be back with a topper before we know it.

I love the hypocritical offerings that always come up whenever Melo is mentioned. Every person on here who claims he is all of these negative things would love to have him on their team.

YepItsMe: "Melo is the worst player in the league." Really? Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha What a dopey , uninformed thing to say. "...the worst player." Really? Of all the players in the league you think Melo is the worst? Clearly you don't have any idea what you're talking about. Perhaps you should stick to hockey.

Yes, you guys are right he's so amazing.

He's a 45% shooter who puts it up 20 + times a game and plays no D. He has been in trouble off the court twice. He demands max money to not make his teamates better. He has no one to blame but himself for that roster being the way it is. Because instead of waiting half a season and going there as a free agent, he forced their hand and they had to trade all of their talent to acquire him. He's a cancer. Go look at what a lot of NBA execs say about him. Sure, hes talented. But until he removes his head from his ****, all he is going to do is sell tickets, not win. If I am a fan of the Knicks, I want him gone.

January 5, 2014  11:47 AM ET

Oh and just an FYI, the Clippers are laughing at these reports.

January 5, 2014  11:50 AM ET

The Knicks have also had internal discussions about the idea of trading Iman Shumpert for Lebron James.

"Every person on here who claims he is all of these negative things would love to have him on their team. "

As a 6th man, at a mid range salary, sure. As a max contract, focus of the entire team "star?" No, I really wouldn't.

I just don't think 'Melo, with his attitude and his game, works as a primary star on any team in the modern NBA. If he'd played in the late 90's and early 2000s when the entire game was just isolating your best scorer and letting him work, he'd have been the best in the league, but the rules have changed and that isn't a way to play winning basketball any more.

There's no doubt that 'Melo is a terrific talent and very skilled player, but he's not an all around player, even on offense, which makes him not nearly worth what he demands to be paid.

January 5, 2014  08:23 PM ET

Exactly. The NBA is a Capped league where 1 bad contract cripples your team. He is the worst per dollar player in the NBA (Kobe is up there too) because his production is so low for that money that you cannot compensate with the little money you have left. The NBA today is about teamwork, especially team D.
