07:29 AM ET 01.06 | As it turns out, fans in Motown may not have to wait long for a new head coach. The Detroit Lions' head coaching job is Ken Whisenhunt's to lose, sources close to the situation told ESPN. Whisenhunt, the San Diego Chargers' offensive coordinator, and Lions general manager Martin Mayhew spent two seasons as teammates with the Washington Redskins in 1989 and 1990. Those who worked with Whisenhunt in Arizona are convinced that the former Cardinals head coach is going to impress Lions ownership with his presentation. Detroit already knows what Whisenhunt did to revive the careers of quarterbacks Kurt Warner and Philip Rivers. The Lions would want Whisenhunt to have equally successful results with Detroit quarterback Matthew Stafford, who threw 11 interceptions over his last six games this season.

As long as he brings in a good DC , Detroit can be a true contender.

Damn. Can he finish the season.???

It's not difficult to find an upgrade over Schwartz.

I thought Whisenhunt did a nice job as HC in Arizona. If he'd had Carson Palmer last year, he would likely still be there.

You're right he did do a good job at AZ . If he had remained the Head Coach Carson Palmer would not be in AZ.

Two years ago the Lions was in the playoffs, last year a disaster, and this year a collapse . First problem a new coach has got to resolve is in internal, then get the QB squared away, and if all are successful you will have a good chance of having a winning football team.

The Lions FO will be in Denver hoping the Chargers lose so that they can hire Wiz on the spot...lol

I'd prefer Dungy, but since he's done coaching I think Whisenhunt is the next best coach that is available. He did wonders with Warner and also with Rivers this season, hopefully he can duplicate that success with Stafford. They need to draft a complimentary WR since Titus Young and Broyles (3 knee injuries in 3 seasons) have been busts. The O line played surprisingly well and hopefully they can upgrade that pathetic secondary. If they do those two things they could be a very formidable team in the NFC.

Pee on dungy! That butt hole wants Suh ban from football, but what that jerk forgets he also played the same way as Suh did. Whisenhunt would be the best fit for DETROIT and would help Stafford a great QB.

have they even interviewed him yet? I dont think they can till charges are done. Which makes this hire funny. They also need to rooney rule someone too, even tho they are announcing K.W. the coach already. Good luck trying to get someone to interview. I smell a fine coming just like when marriucci was hired.

Good point. Maybe he doesn't want the job. Or, maybe he wants a different job. There are a lot of teams looking for HCs right now.

Dungy? He couldn't get Tampa Bay over the hump. Gruden took Dungy's team and won the SB with them. So then the defensive oriented Dungy lucks into the Colts job, with Manning as his QB. Even better, he had the same O-Coordinator and the same O-Line coach left over and they remained until manning was done in Indy. But what happened to Indy's defense? Nothing! They showed up one year, and won the SB, becasue of Bob Sanders being healthy. The Colts won the SB not because of Dungy, but in spite of him. He was routinely outcoached, especially in the playoffs!

San Diego keeps winning, driving up the price. Then he says no?

For those expressing support for Dungy, consider that his years of pontificating from the broadcast booth have probably alienated 90% of NFL players. He is out of touch with the NFL locker room, which operates at a much more primal level than his moralistic standards. Plus, we wasn't really much of a head coach; his defenses with the Colts mostly stunk, he rode the coattails of Peyton as far as they could take him, and he was one and done in the playoffs all too often.
