Will Sox choose Lowell over A-Rod?

Three weeks ago, it seemed A-Rod's next stop might very well be Boston. Instead of angling to add A-Rod to the mix, it may be time to talk contract with their incumbent third baseman, Mike Lowell. Lowell has said many times that he likes it in Boston and wants to stay, and it's hard to imagine that the Sox won't find a way to keep him.

The Red Sox better take Lowell over A-Rod because if they dont we would suck big time. The Red Sox are doing absoutley fine without A-Rod

May 21, 2007  09:33 AM ET

They could just move A-Rod back to short and Lugo over to 2nd...

May 21, 2007  09:41 AM ET

Are you kidding me? He thinks he's under a microscope now in NY. Boston would eat him alive when he pulls his usually 'fall swoon'. Not to mention, he's only going to opt out for another long term deal. And aside from Dice-K...we all know how those have worked out. And how Theo feels about them.

May 21, 2007  10:19 AM ET

Lowell is by far the Better choice. I have never liked A-Rod and would take Lowell over him anyday. Lowell has been underrated his whole career, kind of like Ortiz when he was in the Twins. The Red Sox have a way of bringing out the best in players. That is what real coaching does.

May 21, 2007  10:39 AM ET

Here we go again...baseball only centers around NY, Bos, Chi (as a joke) and LA because the west coast will**** and moan about an east coast bias. Wake me up in September when the real teams are alive, and I can actually talk about baseball instead of 'ooooh...what's going to happen with the Yankees, and what's Boston's reaction?' High school popularity contests thinks this is sad.

Trust me Sox fans, I am a die hard Yanks fan. However, you are doing fine without Mr. April. The Sox should stick with Lowell. He provides steady defense, hits you 20 HRs a year and most of all, is NOT a head case. If I were Theo, I would find Manny a new home (maybe L.A. Angels or Dodgers) for a few top prospects, then flip them for another big bat and maybe pitching help. The Sox look great right now, they have done so in spite of Manny thus far, they can trade him now while he still has top-shelf value, and still get better, which is scary. By the way, don't trade Jon Lester away for Rich Harden. Yes, Harden is very skilled, but his young arm has already failed under the grind a few times. Lester, Dice, Beckett and Papelbon give you a great quartet for years, don't mess with it.

May 21, 2007  12:20 PM ET

Ortiz WAS NOT under-rated when he was with the Twins...I wish you Red Sox fans would stop saying that...

Ortiz: 1997, 15 games, 49 ABs, .327, 1 HR, 6 RBI
Ortiz: 1998, 86 games,278 AB, .277, 9 HR, 46 RBI
Ortiz: 1999, 10 games, 20 AB, .000, 0 HR, 0 RBI
Ortiz: 2000, 130 games, 415 AB, .282, 10 HR, 63 RBI
Ortiz: 2001, 89 games, 303 AB, .234, 18 HR, 48 RBI
Ortiz: 2002, 125 games, 412 AB, .272, 20 HR, 75 RBI

Those were his Minnesota days....does those numbers look like the Big Papi y'all have now? He was hurt A LOT and was expected to play 1B, which he didn't do well...

I'm glad Papi turned out well for the R Sox. He was always a nice guy and I'm glad his career flourished, but seriously, the Twins, based on his performance with them, did the right thing. He was not under-rated, he was rated how he should have been...He simply didn't perform, and was hurt A LOT...

May 21, 2007  12:27 PM ET

My grandma would give the sox 30 HR and 70 RBI in fenway...

May 21, 2007  12:28 PM ET

OK back to the subject, Lowell is doing great right now so why take A-rod over him. A-rod is a chump and is horrible in a clutch situations, why would the Sox want a guy like that. A-rod hasn't played shortstop since he played in Texas in 2003 and Lugo is more consistent offensively so picking him up as a SS doesn't seem like a good idea to me either. Let someone else have him if he wants to leave NY!!!

May 21, 2007  12:30 PM ET

Im glad that even though boston is winning that all that is talked about is yankees...it doesnt matter what you guys do until you leave the al east you will always be living in yankees shadows, but thats what you get when your in a division wich hosts the 26 time world series champs....get used to it chumps!

May 21, 2007  12:34 PM ET

Hey, who says the Sox have a choice?
Last I heard A-Rod loves NY and wants to stay?!?
Foolish story.

May 21, 2007  01:18 PM ET

At this point in time, and no I don't just mean this season, were I having to contemplate this move, I would have to stick with Lowell. First of all, there are too many hard feelings, not just with fans but within the clubhouse, over the A-Rod deal then went south when he was supposed to come to Boston in the first place. Second, Mike Lowell is a solid guy to have in your club and on your roster everyday. He is a character guy that brings intangibles to the team in that manner.
That said, AntiG brought up a good point...Lowell at 3rd, A-Rod at SS, and move Lugo to 2nd...but can the Sox really afford the cost of the experiment?
Any person that would say they do not want A-Rod on their team is being ridiculous, even if he isn't Mr. October, he is the guy than can give a team the extra pop to get to October.
But as AllStarz also said, do the Sox have a choice? A-Rod did say he loved it in NY and even if it is just posturing, he did say that. For now.

May 21, 2007  01:22 PM ET

It won't matter when Rodriguez opts out and goes to the safe enclave of southern California, anyway, so the Red Sox can settle on Mike Lowell and be happy with such a choice.

May 21, 2007  01:58 PM ET

Die hard sox fan... Are you people nuts? How would you take Lowell over A-Rod? There are some hard feelings (probably the only good point made on here) but those will be short-lived. Lowell is working out really well here but good lord... A-Rod is still one of the best in the game! Top 3 easy. I don't know about some of you guys. And thanks Jim L. ~ I hate hearing Papi was underrated too.

May 21, 2007  01:59 PM ET

The Red Sox are not going to pay A-Rod the money he deserves and wants. He is not going to stay with the Yanks because Yankees fans are horrible to him they only like him when hes hitting record breaking HRs in a month not when he goes on a slump like every other player does. He should go to a city and a team that will respect him for the great baseball player that he is.

May 21, 2007  02:24 PM ET

The Red Sox won't do that, I agree. They'll simply take that loot and enhance Johan Santana's bank account instead.

May 21, 2007  02:33 PM ET

'The Red Sox won't do that, I agree. They'll simply take that loot and enhance Johan Santana's bank account instead.'
Baseball's a joke...this quote above could easily happen along with Ichiro...absolute joke. And has any mediocre-bad team been talked about more than the Yankees? People outside of the northeast wouldn't understand this, but football is king..not because of gambling but because of....ACTION!!! Pitch..ball, pitch..foul ball, pitch..no wait..throw over to 1st..ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ. I think the lack of action just gives you people more time to run your mouths with those nasty, disgusting accents. OK..I'm done with the non-sports board, now.

May 21, 2007  02:41 PM ET

lol Well, what I said there was in jest, really. Besides, Santana isn't a free agent for another year, so there will be lots of time for he and the Twins to dialogue about a contract extension.

Minnesota may have the reputation for being unwilling to spend vigorously, but I certainly think that they will go all out to try and keep Santana for most of, if not all of his remaining career.

May 21, 2007  02:55 PM ET

keep lowell and spend that money on some more pitching or another bat. we dont need a- rod

May 21, 2007  03:10 PM ET

JayCee3, you are right about where A-Rod stands, actually, I think A-Rod is probably the best in the game, but you have to look at whether a piece to the puzzle will or will not fit. In this case, I really don't think it would. I just think the Sox are better off with the status quo. They have a good 3rd baseman, at a very good price in the over-valued market.
