07:43 AM ET 01.08 | Generally, Charlie Strong's hire was received warmly among Texas fans. One dissenter: billionaire donor Red McCombs, who had lobbied the administration to consider former NFL coach turned ESPN analyst Jon Gruden. McCombs described himself as a "little bit stunned" by the news in an interview with San Antonio's KZDC 1250-AM. "I think the whole thing is a little bit sideways," McCombs said. "I don't have any doubt but what Charlie is a fine coach. I think he would make a great position coach, maybe a coordinator." ... McCombs said he was not contacted about the search and felt that he and other donors should have been involved. "It's a kick in the face ... We have boosters who have a lot of knowledge about the game," McCombs said. McCombs did say he was a "team player" and would support Strong.

Maybe Red could use that "lot of knoweldge" to figure out that Strong has been both a successful coordinator and a successful head coach. Good to know Red thinks he would be a great position coach. Why doesn't he just say it: IF YOUR BLACK, STEP BACK.

Well now, let's not go there...

I think it is more just that the boosters were basically ignored during the search and they aren't used to that. Dodds would have called them up, schmoozed them a bit, asked for their opinion and sold them on Strong. This points more to the alum want to be more involved there and the coach is going to HAVE to consider them...no more just doing what is best for the football program. He has to win, win big, and "appease" all the boosters. Charlie definitely has his work cut out for him....

I mean you have one BOR bragging about how much money TU has to get a coach, and now a booster bragging about just closing their eyes and picking one...LOL

Obviously Patterson didn't value McCombs racist input.

January 8, 2014  08:48 AM ET

Boosters don't want him because he doesn't care about them. He is the anti-Mack Brown.

jump to conclusions much. He's a loud mouth idiot who also called McCoy a gimp so maybe he's anti-handicapped as well. If you knew anything about the guy you'd know he's a jackaszs but he's not what you are trying to suggest. Far from it. Just someone who thinks because his name is on buildings he is entitled to tell the AD who to hire.

It's amazing how writing a big check makes some folks believe they should have big input. I understand some peeps are just "like that", but it's the responsibility of the Prez, the AD, and the other BOR folks to get everybody on the same page about a hire, and get them to either speak positively, or not speak at all.

They still have work to do with Red.

Pretty much that's it although they had their input but you had factions backing certain candidates none of whom Patterson was really interested in as much as he was Strong. Red backed Gruden, another group from Dallas wanted Saban, another group from Houston wanted Harbaugh. Patterson was pretty much sold on Strong or Fisher and after interviewing Strong and with input from the search committee decided to move on him instead of waiting on anyone else. Everyone else being tossed out was pretty much speculative media BS.

I must have missed the part where he said something to that effect. Are you saying he is against Strong because Strong is black? Do you have information that shows that is the case? I typically like some of your posts but this does not sit well with me. He could be a racist I don't know but I don't think that is the first conclusion everyone should jump to. Just my two cents.

And there you go.

It's not just the athletes who have a grandiose sense of entitlement.

The position coach line is pretty dumb. Strong had a lot success as a defensive coordinator at UF and won a BCS bowl as a head coach.

McCombs may be a successful businessman but he does not know **** about football.

I think it is more that some of the Boosters have a larger feeling of entitlement, esp if they are giving 6-7 figures.

I donate to Alabama 6-7 figures if you are willing to count a number of them on the right of the decimal point. :-)

boosters=money=voice.

Anyone see the cover story on CNN.com about academics and athletes? interesting.

that, and the fact that he owned 3 pro sports franchises gives him the false sense he knows more about the game than the people in charge
