07:48 AM ET 01.08 | For some, such as Andrej Sekera and Tuomo Ruutu, Tuesday was a day of celebration. But for Canes captain Eric Staal and forward Alexander Semin, it was a day of deep disappointment. Sekera was named to Slovakia's Olympic team for the Sochi Games, and Ruutu was chosen to play for Finland. Both competed in the 2010 Vancouver Games, Ruutu returning with a bronze medal. Staal won a gold medal with Team Canada in Vancouver and wanted to help win another in Sochi, but he was left off the Canadian team. ... "I really felt I'd get an opportunity to defend the gold medal, but unfortunately it was not to be," Staal said by phone from Raleigh. "They went with other choices. Does it feel good to get left off the team? No. Am I good enough to be on the team? Yes. I feel I've proven that."

A lot of guys could say the same thing. Martin St Louis for instance.

Just be smart and don't say anything stupid now because there's lots of time between now and Sochi. Injuries, suspensions.....??

Can't wait for these games.. Anyone else see the projection that had Canada finishing 7th!? LOLOLOLOLOL

Agreed. St. Louis said he was disappointed as well. It isn't as if a dozen or more guys can't validate Staal's feelings.

Funny thing... IMHO, Canada could put together a B Squad with the leftovers, and still be competitive. ;)

Not 7th! But .... good for 4th.

There are at least a couple of guys on every team that could say the same thing. Good enough but....

Third or 4th sounds about right

Clearly I'm hoping not.

The problem is that there is such parity you wouldn't have much trouble with making a case for 5 or 6 countries winning gold. Or any country finishing 6th to 8th.

I'm hoping Canada's forwards and d-men can keep the puck in the offensive zone because I'm not real comfortable with our goaltending.

I'm glad a lot of hockey fans on this site are reasonable. I made a similar comment, that the Olympics would play out a lot like the WJC with CAN finishing 3rd or 4th, on another site and people reacted like I had compared Gretzky to John Scott.

You should know better that to be reasonable and make sense! We tolerate it here (unlike other sites) but ... we much prefer the dopey, unreasonable and provocative here. :-)

That other site was most likely TSN. They take their Canada seriously.

Out of the medals.

It's the only thing that will finally kill this silly nonsense.
