07:35 AM ET 01.09 | Recently named to the Canadian Olympic team, Montreal's P.K. Subban believes he's in line for a serious rasie. [Subban] will be asking for $8-9 million a season in a new contract, according to TSN's Bob McKenzie. ... [Subban] is set to become a free agent at the end of the season and the Canadiens want to lock him up with a long-term contract. According to McKenzie, Subban will ask for significantly more than the $7 million per season Toronto Maple Leafs captain Dion Phaneuf got in his seven-year extension. The Canadiens started negotiations with Subban in early December but there has been no movement on a deal yet. He signed his current two year, $5.75 million deal at the start of the lockout-shortened season in January.

Anyone know how "long term?" Didn't read the article, or haven't heard what he could be asking for as far as length?

There are plenty of Dmen making 7.5. I bet they land around the 8 mark.

January 9, 2014  09:13 AM ET

and he'll probably get something close to that.

I think 8 would be the number...and versus his peers it seems like an ok number, it's high, but he is a top tier dman in the league so I don't mind.
