Tortorella unloads on 'gimmick' shootout

07:41 AM ET 01.10 | Perhaps John Tortorella's hostility toward practicing, including for shootouts, is starting to show. The Canucks have ceded points to opponents, and failed to gain as many as they could, in part one can argue because of a lack of specific practice of particular game elements, such as the other-goalie-pulled 6-on-5, and the shootout. ... "That gimmick should be out of the league," said Tortorella after practice. Tortorella would indeed garner votes for this view, including my own, but reality is it exists -- and playoff positions, even home-ice advantage, could pivot on shootout results. When it was noted to Tortorella the team didn't really do much a job to simulate an actual shootout on Thursday, there was a slight flash of a puff of smoke coming from his ears.

But I bet if the Canuckleheads actually won some shootouts, he'd probably be all for it.

Tortellini is an idiot...and the Canucks deserve him.

Torts wouldn't be Torts unless he was getting under someone's skin.

Totally agree. I never understood what the problem was with a game ending in a tie.

That having been said it does sound as if Torts has gone off his meds lately and is turning back into the guy we knew in New York.

I like his style and he's right.

But he's the Canucks' coach so I don't care.....

Exactly.

Until it is removed from the game you have to deal with it.

The Pens are one of the best in the shoutout and it's not because of talent alone. It's because they practice it every practice.

The sooner the league dumps the so-called skills competition the better, it's such a ridiculous gimmick. If it's still tied after the 4-on-4 period then it ends in a tie, deal with it.

January 10, 2014  10:07 AM ET

He still doesn't understand why he can't have a guy out there to try to block the shot.

Agree as the last 5 minutes of a tie game is both teams dumping it in the other zone. Boring.

Yeah, why does the goalie have to make the save?

Which is also why MAF tends to stop players on break-aways and penalty shots.
Love him or hate him but he's one of the best 1 on 1 goalies in the league.

Torts has the Sedins, I bet he'd like to eliminate the shoot-out and replace it with a competition to see who can cycle the puck along the boards the longest.

January 10, 2014  10:24 AM ET

So if Torts was an MLB Manager and felt the same way about the DH he wouldn't use one?

Practice practice practice.

The first year they had shoot outs Sid and Geno stunk, Geno for an extended period.

Now Sid is a mainstay and Geno usually in the top 3.
