02:56 PM ET 01.12 | New England Patriots rookie punter Ryan Allen got a rude awakening to the NFL playoffs on Saturday night. In the first half against the Indianapolis Colts, Allen watched a snap sail over his head and toward the end zone. That is when he panicked. Rather than simply kicking the ball out of the back of the endzone for a safety, Allen scooped it up and attempted to make a play for his team. Instead, he got sandwiched by two Colts defenders and the ball still ended up going out of the end zone for a safety. However, Allen put himself at an unnecessary risk of injury when he scooped up the ball and he paid the price. Allen ended up injuring his shoulder during the play and was forced to leave the game. Now, Allen will undergo an MRI.

I couldn't believe Dan Dierdorf, with all of his NFL and broadcasting experience, suggested that Allen should have fallen on the ball on the Patriots 2 yd line, instead of kicking the ball out of the end zone.

What terrible writing. The overuse of Allen's name is distracting to the read.

give the 2 pts but never surrender a almost sure TD from the 1 yard line.

Yeah, that was a bonehead observation for his farewell broadcast.

Poor Deirdorf had way too many hits on the head.

Agreed. Didn't cost but 2 points, I guess he rather it was 7. Like the punter is actually thinking about all of that when the ball sails over his head.

That's why it's on the coaching staff to teach him to kick the ball out of the back of the end zone in that situation.

Unless the special team coaches had been teaching him that all season and he just panicked, I'd have to hold them at least partly responsible.

IMO this whole ordeal has the makings of a great fake field goal opportunity.

You have a legitimate reason to keep Tom Brady on the field for field goal attempts. My guess is they dial one up before this season is in the books.

at the very least it gives the opposition something else to have to consider.

Absolutely.

I thought a flag should have been thrown on the punter for a forward pass which he tried to do. I know it is 5 yard penalty and I think the Colts should have been given the option of a first down or a safety.

January 13, 2014  10:47 AM ET

I thought he was trying to pass the ball to #27, but couldn't pull it off. If he had been able to throw the ball, it would have either been an incomplete pass and the Colts would have had the ball around the 45 yard line, or #27 catches it and starts running. Either way is better that surrendering 2 points.

Anyone can be hurt on that field. Kickers, it is about time to think about getting your lard bucket in shape...
