Boston's problem: How to spend all that money

07:32 AM ET 01.13 | File this under first-world problems. How will they spend all of their money? Fans of the Astros or Royals or Rays or really anyone other than the Yankees and Dodgers will read this and blanch, but it's a question confronting the Red Sox front office every day. What's the best way to exploit a financial advantage when rules changes have limited amateur spending, and history has proven that wild free agent sprees are bad business? The question wasn't of pressing relevance this winter, since the Red Sox locked in most of their core a year ago. But with nearly $100 million coming off the books next winter, even if the Red Sox extend ace Jon Lester and DH David Ortiz, they could still be looking at over $50 million to spend, according to WEEI.com's Alex Speier.

Resign Lester, Papi, then give the rest to Clayton Kershaw.

If Boegarts, Bradley, Middlebrooks and some of the young pitchers show MLB staying power in the next few years then sign them to good contracts long before they reach free agency.
Find a 1st baseman to succeed Napoli, a catcher for the future, and a couple of good young outfielders to phase in as Victorino ages and the BoSox have a contending team for the next decade!

Just gotta hope that he doesn't develop "Koufax Elbow".

I think they'll try to free up some salary space for 2014 by trying to move either Peavey or Dempster in a trade.

Looked up free agents to be, at this point, for 2015. A few great pitchers, but after that the pickins is slim.

Given the Yankees recent m.o. this is a little concerning.

Ortiz should receive the next $200 million contract. Do it Boston!

You certainly live up to your name!!! Bobby V is a heck of a source for your info. Isn't it all about being hot at the right time. I respect the Tigers and their talent, but somehow the BoSox beat them. Should be a great battle in 2014 between the Red Sox and the Tigers.
