Franklin destroying Vandy's recruiting class

07:34 AM ET 01.13 | What a difference a few days makes. On Saturday morning, Vanderbilt had 20 commitments and a 2014 football recruiting class that was ranked in the top 25 in the country. By Sunday night, a day after coach James Franklin left for Penn State, the Commodores had what one recruiting site called three solid commitments. It's not uncommon for schools to lose recruits when a coach leaves, but what's happening to Vanderbilt 23 days before signing day is not normal. Two Vanderbilt commitments now say they are going to Penn State, and Franklin has offered scholarships to at least six others. "I've never seen it in this volume, quite this fast, of someone trying to pillage their own commitment class for their new job," said Jesse Johnson of Rivals recruiting site VandySports.com.

JF was apparently paying close attention when Lane left UTk.

Wrong, just plain wrong. I don't think I'd want my kid playing for a guy like this.

Those were some dark days. Little did I know they'd only get darker with the reign of Dooley.

thanks for the morning chill GR.

You know me, such a nice guy -- I'll do anything for a East Div rival.

It was a surreal time when Kiffy left. It was the moment the first crack in my "UT is the mecca of college football" wall I had built was felt.

That wall has since been bulldozed...and run back over...and ground to dust...and recycled into the logos of 40 other teams that are better.

Oh well...in Butch I trust.

Gotta give your current guy all your trust, I feel a lot of the same pain at the moment. Hoping it's not gonna stay long.

If I was recruited by coach and we have built a bond between us and prior to signing day he moved to what is considered a better football program and he did not contact me, I would be pissed.

January 13, 2014  10:17 AM ET

Makes sense. A kid "commits" to a school thinking they will play for a certain HC. If that changes, then the recruit should reconsider. The HC maybe the ONLY reason he chose that school or at least the deciding factor.

Tradition football name schools can sell their program and coaches are not that big a factor. Vandy is not in that category.

But what if your kid wants to play for that guy thus the change of schools.

This happens all the time when HCs leave...

When kids make a choice, they want to play for that HC or that position coach... Not that many places where a kid selects the school.. Maybe Stanford and UT for those Texas kids..

If Franklin think the kid deserves the PSU offer and kid wants to go there. I have no issue with it.

But as a father, I will tell my kid wait to see who Vandy hires before making a rash decision

Also, having kids now keeps foosball in perspective. Not a life changing experience one way or the other.

Plus, if I am even watching TV on Saturdays in the fall lately its been My Little Ponies or Super Hero Squad.

UF will be out of that in a heartbeat. Too much talent around them. Plus Boom is not Dooley so there's that.

Random responses quad.

Oh boohoo ! That's just the way it is in CFB. The coach's only allegiance is to the job that he presently has.
