Can Georgia poach Kirby Smart?

07:35 AM ET 01.13 | Louisville announced Bobby Petrino as its new head coach Thursday, and, by Sunday, had a new defensive coordinator in Todd Grantham. First reports had Kevin Steele, a staffer at Alabama, becoming Petrino's defensive coordinator, but Steele pulled out. That apparently opened the door for Grantham's hire. Coincidentally, or perhaps not, Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart figures to be among the first people Richt contacts as a potential replacement. Smart, a former Georgia player and assistant coach, was pursued four years ago before Grantham was hired, and there's no reason Georgia wouldn't try again. Failing that, Georgia could stay in-house with either Wilson (who was Mississippi State's defensive coordinator from 2011-12) or inside linebackers coach Kirk Olivadotti.

Maybe dangle the HCIW in front of him this time. He might jump.

That would be the only shot GR, that and back up the brinks truck

He is likely worth it in the long run, considering Richt's apparent ceiling of success.

I think it speaks volumes about where UL is in the hierarchy of college football if they can poach a coordinator from an upper tier school for the same gig.

But $$$ talks.

Could the hiring of LK as OC be an inducement for Kirby to consider another offer from his alma mater?

January 13, 2014  09:16 AM ET

What about Kirby's kids? As parents, are he and Mary Beth OK with moving the family at the kids' current ages? How do Tuscaloosa's schools stack up against Athens'?

He was well payed at UGA. Louisville upped the ante (Better paycheck, slicker AD, Papa John's money), once again showing their will-pay-for-championships hand. The only issue is delivering the championships... Otherwise, they'll be throwing their money at someone else before you can say, "Moonlight Bar-B-Q Inn."

Seriously? Alabama schools are among the worst in the country. Anyone who cares about their childrens' education and who have the resources send their kids to private schools. With their salaries, most major college coaches can afford this, tho. The real question is, why leave Bama for Georgia? Money? Coach in waiting? He can be that in Tuscaloosa. Money? Guess that worked for Michigan.

Not really, it speaks volumes about how uga didn't find it necessary to keep him. This was grantham getting his while the getting was good. His defenses have underperformed every year. I was giddy when I heard they "poached" him. This is the best news I've had about uga football for a while.

Will it hurt recruiting? I'm not famaliar with Grantham, but my first assessment was BP was trying to get a solid in-road into Georgia and N Florida for top-flight defensive talent.

Any concerns Louisville just got a little stronger on the recruiting trail in your neck of the woods?

I was thinking that a lot of UGaly fans were gonna be happy, you pretty much nailed it PDX.

But the bigger, longer term Dawg issue is with Richt himself IMO. How long do you let a successful-but-not-championship-successful guy stay? At least with Mus's situation, if he struggles again this year it'll be an easy decision to kick him to the curb.

He's probably 3rd or 4th on our list of recruiters. I really don't worry about UL recruiting at all... I mean there are bigger programs recruiting our state to worry about. We may lose a couple recruits because of this, might gain a few too depending on the hire.

This hire will probably make or break richt's future at uga.

Sounds much like Mus's OC hire. Gotta get this one right, or else.
