Lions down to their fourth choice

07:27 AM ET 01.14 | Detroit Lions president Tom Lewand didn't set out to "win the press conference" when he fired Jim Schwartz, which is probably a good thing now. And barring a major surprise, it won't win in the court of public approval either. Not after they whiffed on Ken Whisenhunt, their obvious and popular first choice. The Lions can be counted upon to heavily spin their eventual hire. They will laud their new coach, probably either Baltimore offensive coordinator Jim Caldwell or fired Tennessee coach Mike Munchak. ... The Lions are on to at least their second pick now, and more likely their third or fourth. And they now have a perception problem. If they're so talented, and supposedly the team most ready to win of the six who fired coaches, why do they keep getting turned down?

They maybe should have fired the Front office before they fired Schwartz. Whiz at least interviewed with them. Lovie Smith and Bill O'Brian wouldn't even return their calls.

Only the Browns were dumb enough to hire him after he first was fired as HC. I don't ever see him getting any kind of job in the league.

maybe because they THINK he has some keen insight into 2 of their division rivals.

The only time Caldwell won anything in his coaching career was when he had a healthy Peyton Manning.

He might do well in the press box. Down on the field was his issue.

Yeah, there's that.

But something else is really rotten in Detroit, and we aren't seeing the whole story here.

I think he'd do a pretty good job wearing an apron, making change and pointing to the empty spots in the parking lot.

Two things that are wrong in Detroit - big money for head coaches, which the Titans out bid Detroit for Whisenhunt , and involvement with players decisions.

Ask Marty Mornhinweg.

The Lions have talent to be a playoff team, however, the results don't show on the field. No coach want to touch this team due to the inconsistency of the team season after season. When you have Megatron, Bush, Sue, Stafford and a host of other good players things are suppose to come together; its not happening, you blew a commanding 9-3 record with both Rodgers and Cutler out for their respective teams and you can't finish the season as the division champs; what gives? You can't blame everything on the fired coach.
