The Yankees' infield is a mess

07:34 AM ET 01.14 | Losing Alex Rodriguez may come with an upside in the Bronx. Indeed, the added flexibility brought about by Saturday's news affords the Yankees even more opportunity to be aggressive in the bidding for Masahiro Tanaka and, if that doesn't work out, Ubaldo Jimenez or Ervin Santana or Matt Garza. And there's no question the rotation is the chief concern for a Yanks club that, no matter the specifics of the luxury tax cap, is perpetually in "win-now" mode. Make no mistake, though: Third base, in particular, and the infield, at large, are pretty big concerns, too. ... So, yeah, the infield's kind of a mess, and as we sit here today, it's hard to see the Yankees, even with [Jacoby Ellsbury and Carlos Beltran] aboard, making their best bid for an American League East title without addressing it at some point in the coming months.

Is mike pagliarulo still alive?

Will be interesting to watch how they try to fix the many holes in their lineup.

Jeter to 3rd. Sounds like their best option right now based on what the NY Post is saying.

Even with the high priced free agents it sounds all patchwork.

That would be their best option. It's a shame Jeter is bigger than the team, and will never agree to move from SS.

With what? Last I looked, there weren't any free agent third basemen out there. Especially for 1 year. Because the Yankees will paying around $23MM for a third baseman in 2015.

Agreed. He won't do it.

I'm not convinced he wouldn't make the move if he felt it would help the team AND prolong his career.

well said. you are a wordsmith.

Not buying what the article says at all. Last time I looked Kelly Johnson and Brian Roberts both played multiple IF positions? Brendan ryan can't hit, but he sure as heck can play defense. I believe one Michael Young is still out there and he has played every IF position except first base and is a career .300 hitter. I suspect talks have begun with him now the arod thing is decided.

It is already better than it was last year: In 2013 Who was on first, anybody was at SS, OMG was the catcher and What played third. The Cano is a big loss argument is weak from a team standpoint. Cano gone, Ellsbury, Beltran and McCann in. No comparison. Not like they had to replace an all star IF.

well, tough decissions are to be made in the bronx, but there is a lowly infielder/outfielder in Chone Figgins, for a minimum league salary he may be willing to switch leagues from the atlantic league to the major league
