07:35 AM ET 01.14 | Of course, the franchise has a lot going for it in any bid. The Angels offer a prime location, boast a star-studded team and have available funds. And according to a weekend report from the Japanese publication Sports Hochi, that combination has made them among three favorites -- along with the Yankees and Dodgers -- to land coveted 25-year-old right-hander Masahiro Tanaka. But 11 days remain in Tanaka's free agency, with Major League clubs given until 2 p.m. PT on Jan. 24 to sign the Rakuten Golden Eagles' ace. The Cubs are prepared to offer a nine-figure contract, according to CSN Chicago. And ultimately "someone is going to come in and blow everyone away," a National League general manager told the Boston Globe. In short, there's a long way to go.

How do the Angels have available funds with the bloated contracts of Hamilton and Pujols?

This is going to be a crazy bidding war. I'll bet Tanaka gets at least $125 mil. Is $150 mil out of the question?

No, it's not. Teams overpay for guys now, as they're flush with money from TV contracts. It's a good time to be a talented baseball player.

and in some cases you don't have to be talented, just a pulse will do.

The Yankees have another 22 Mill to spend!!!

I believe it will be at least $160M. 7 years @ $20M + $20M posting fee. And that may be low.

About 250 million per year from the local TV contract.

I have no doubt that he'll choose the Yankees.

If owners gamble paying a guy 25 mil at age 37, why not do it for a guy at 25 year old?

Great time to be Tanaka ha ha. I sure as heck hope the Yankees can get him because that would at least give us a chance to compete again with the upper level teams in the division.
