07:43 AM ET 01.14 | Why are we seeing the proliferation of outdoor NHL attractions? The 2014 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic not only generated the largest attendance and broadcast viewership for a regular-season game in league history, it also made a profit of more than $20 million. According to an NHL source, the Jan. 1 game at Michigan Stadium posted more than $30 million in revenue against costs of $10 million. Approximately two-thirds of the revenue was derived from ticket sales. ... An additional $10 million in revenue came from retail and advertising sales. A specific breakdown of those categories was unavailable. As a point of comparison for those numbers: The previous Winter Classic, the 2012 edition at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, is believed to have made $15 million in revenue against costs of $10 million.

He might also push to have all the new arenas built without a roof so all fans can "enjoy" the outdoor experience.

I can only imagine what the U of M makes after a football game with the better weather and increased concessions!

Do you think Winnipeg will ever get one of these games played at the Blue Bombers facility? I mean, it would have to be during mosquito season, like in June-July but, it'd be nice.

Scary part for me... Jerry Jones is waiting to see that one too. If they can put 100k in the Big House, I'd bet a buck he could do the same in the Death Star.

Last night John Shorthouse (play-by-play guy for the Nux on Sportsnet) had the Ducks playing the Dodgers.

If the winter classics weren't fixed and Bettman wasn't included in this then this would be a pretty decent T and R.
Got to have more Classics in Montreal, Calgary and Winnipeg.
Cold weather will decrease the costs of hosting it so you don't waste 2M keeping the ice frozen.

Out of curiosity, I wonder what the Rose Bowl game that same day made?

Careful Hank. Somebody will probably show up around midnight and personally attack you while telling you Donald Fehr has it worse. :)

I don't think they have large enough outdoor venues to pull in the type of revenue that you can get from facilities here in the states.
