Boston, Lester not talking deal

07:39 AM ET 01.17 | Clayton Kershaw knew his payday was coming, and, with it, he likely put smiles on the faces of impending free agents across the land. It is a deal worth more than Justin Verlander's $180 million deal, or the $175 million contract given to Felix Hernandez. He will make an average of $30.7 million per season. ... With the Dodgers' ace off the market, [Jon Lester] and Detroit's Max Scherzer head into the 2014 season representing most desirable potential free agent pitchers (with Cleveland's Justin Masterson, the Reds' Homer Bailey, and Kansas City's James Shields just a notch behind). First off, according to major league source, the Red Sox have not started talks with Lester about a possible extension beyond the 2014 season. All signs continue to suggest negotiations will start once spring training rolls around.

Boston needs Lester, but I feel the Sox will let him walk before they offer a contract similar to Kershaw's. Lester is good, but he's not Kershaw.

He will be 31 next year. 5 years $100M. If he wants more than that, let someone else pay it.

Do you guys think he can return to his 3.2ish days?

January 17, 2014  08:21 AM ET

My negotiating position would be to wait, see both how well he pitches this coming season and also see how some of the young pitchers handle MLB hitters.
Then decide how much the team needs him, in dollar terms? If he wants silly money, let him go.
Five years at $100 million sounds reasonable if he pitches well in '14.

I saw this great movie on DVD where I Love LA froze to death in the middle of a giant maze. I stood up and cheered!

If they wait until the end of 2014, he becomes a free agent. Chances become very slim at that point of retaining him.

I don't think the Red Sox give out contracts of that length any more.

Scherzer had a fantastic year last year - but had two years ERA over 4. and upper 3's for a couple more.... I think he needs to bring it again before I would say that....

I'd say last year alone puts him on your list, especially if you're bold enough to have Iwakuma and Kuroda on there.

I agree. Pitchers who will be 31 before the season starts and have logged over 1,200 innings the last six years do not see anything more than five years. No question about how good he is. I can see a team giving him $22-25 million a year, but for fewer years.

So what is the down side of Kuroda and Iwakuma?
