09:49 AM ET 01.18 | NASCAR is planning a vast restructuring of the points system in its premier Sprint Cup Series that would greatly emphasize winning races and feature eliminations in its Chase playoff system, according to multiple sources briefed on the plan this week. In addition to expanding the Chase field from 12 to 16 drivers, a win in the season's first 26 races would virtually ensure a driver entry into the championship Chase. If there were more than 16 winners, the 16 with the most wins and highest in points would gain entry.

Makes perfect sense to me -- get rid of the damn "Chase" and go back to the old system ... Duh!!!

Might make the S&Ps think twice about running 10 laps and then going behind the wall.. especially at the plate races

The old points system had its flaws too.. especially when a driver has clinched the championship with 2-3 races to go.. whats the point of running the remaining races??

As Paul Harvey has said -- here is the rest of the story ... from Jayski: NASCAR considering changes to the Chase, points system: NASCAR is planning a vast restructuring of the points system in its premier Sprint Cup Series that would greatly emphasize winning races and feature eliminations in its Chase playoff system, according to multiple sources briefed on the plan this week. In addition to expanding the Chase field from 12 to 16 drivers, a win in the season's first 26 races would virtually ensure a driver entry into the championship Chase. If there were more than 16 winners, the 16 with the most wins and highest in points would gain entry.
Once the Chase field was set, a round of eliminations similar to the NCAA tournament would take place after the third, sixth and ninth race of the Chase, culminating with the championship determined by a winner-takes-all season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Under the proposed system - which could still change before an expected announcement later this month - winning would become virtually a necessity to make the Chase and win the championship.
According to sources briefed on the proposal on Friday, 16 teams would make the Chase, with positions first going to full-time series contenders who won a race through the first 26 races of the season. Should 16 drivers not win races, the remaining slots would be filled by the drivers highest in points.
Once the field is set for the Chase and re-seeded, the four lowest in points among Chase contenders would be eliminated from title contention after the third, sixth and ninth race in the Chase. The four remaining contenders would enter the season finale reset with the same amount of points. The driver who earned the most points in the season finale would be the series champion.
Participants have been told changes could still occur in the format but the proposal addressed this week was the direction NASCAR was now seemingly headed.(Charlotte Observer)
NASCAR Statement: "NASCAR has begun the process of briefing key industry stakeholders on potential concepts to evolve its NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship format. This dialogue is the final phase of a multi-year process that has included the review of extensive fan research, partner and industry feedback and other data-driven insights. NASCAR has no plans to comment further until the stakeholder discussions are complete. We hope to announce any potential changes for the 2014 season to our media and fans very soon."(NASCAR)(1-18-2014)

In a 1-race shoot-out at Homestead.. not one of Jimmie's best tracks.. where he has an average finish of 15th and hasn't won at.. yeah.. Nascar is trying to keep the 48 team from winning #7

I see this plan backfiring hard on NASCAR. They call the finale a "Winner Take All" race, but with the points reset for the final race it becomes even less about winning and more about finishing ahead of the competition.

I think, I can never earn over which I paid by my precedent employer, but I was wrong, world is so large to try their fate.but now I am making $92/hr even more, can easily minimum $1700/week, on the experience everyone must try to do work online, easy way to earn

What in the blue-hell are you talking about??

January 20, 2014  01:04 PM ET

'Elimination heats', I wonder how that is going to work?

January 20, 2014  01:16 PM ET

Rereading your post EarnTaz I guess if you survive til the 10th race everything is reset and 4 drivers will have an opportunity to win the championship.

Which really diminishes the regular season to a.) win 1 race at all costs, and b.) get the best finishes you can in the next 9 races so you have a shot at winning it all on the last race of the season.

Should this "last race for everthing" at least be on some historic much loved race track instead of Miami?

January 20, 2014  01:32 PM ET

So if you win at Daytona, Fontana or Phoenix in the first few weeks you can just chill through the rest of the regular season. No pressure from gaining more points, just go for wins and try anything.

Always the way when you allow too many participants in post season you diminish the regular season.

I don't like these changes.......not any kind of improvement at all.
Get rid of the Chase or leave it alone......no more #13's.
Why does Francy Pants have such a hard time getting it right?

In the end what it does is bring back the first year of the chase where you had numerous drivers capable of winning it all in the last race, if they make these changes that is guaranteed to happen every year in Miami.

Kurt won that time and Hanks 6 time guy broke down if I remember correctly.
