Sox want pitching for Crisp

The Red Sox may continue to say all of the right things about Coco Crisp, but don't fall for it. As the Sox' recent offer to Odalis Perez indicated, the club is very much interested in adding another starting pitcher to its stable in the wake of what could be a season-ending injury to Curt Schilling. So how does Crisp fit in? He is signed for relatively short dollars through 2009 with a club option for 2010. That makes him an attractive option for even smaller-market teams who might have pitching help to deal, particularly if the Red Sox are willing to package a prospect with him.

As long as the "prospect" isn't Buchholz, Ellsbury, Lester, Lowrie or Masterson,.... then go for it.

Crisp is a valuable asset to provide defense and speed. But with Bucholz present, his hitting is a liability. But as the Bosox proved last year, A team can't have too much pitching. It's a tough call, but I wouldn't be too quick to get rid of Crisp just yet.

As I see it, the Red Sox need another starter..The more you give up in a trade, the better pitcher you will get in return. No one is going to give up a decent pitcher for nothing much in return, and no one is going to make a trade with the defending WS champions that could come back at them..One major arm injury during the season and the Red Sox will be forced to overpay...

HUGE Mistake , you can"t teach what this man has , i wold't be so fast to let him go.

February 24, 2008  11:01 AM ET

I'd love to keep him as a 4th outfielder, but he doesn't want to be a cheerleader and I can't blame him. If they can get someone decent for him, I say go for it.

February 24, 2008  11:02 AM ET

everyone wants pitching. reason the trades are slowing down.

February 24, 2008  11:13 AM ET

Yank4Life....i hope you arent just saying that because you dont want the red sox to get more pitching. If you think its a huge mistake why dont you send some of your find pitchas ova to boston in exchange for Coco and a prospect?

February 24, 2008  11:27 AM ET

Another board of nonsense...how many games is Drew actually going to play??? Crisp gets 50 games when Drew is hurt, he will spell Manny when Manny twists his jock and the Ells aint ready to play 162...

And, I am cookoo for cocoa crisps... gah! enough! i want the winning powerball ticket, too.

How about a one for one deal - Coco for Bronson Arroyo.

February 24, 2008  12:13 PM ET

arroyo and his 4+ ERA need to stay in the NL. not to mention he gets smoked by lefties(yankees). coco's gone, he just doesnt know it yet. how bout a catching prospect? thats what the sox need.

February 24, 2008  12:19 PM ET

Welcome to Milwaukee,Coco? Lord knows we have starting pitchers available.

February 24, 2008  12:30 PM ET

Sox dont need another starter. Maybe a starting pitching prospect but not a NOW starter. Tavarez is better as a starter than reliever so he's the insurance behind the rookies. I say we need a bigger bat. We NEED hitting.

February 24, 2008  12:34 PM ET

Francona could lay out a revolving 4-man OF system which would keep everybody happy. You need 486 outfielder games in a full season,... not counting playoffs. Divide that by four and you get over 120 games per player. Add in the likely injuries, and the system makes even more sense,... though everyone will be plenty rested by the end of the season. Tito should have thought of this,.... maybe he has.

February 24, 2008  01:22 PM ET

Coco proved in the playoffs that he doesn't have it in him. We do in fact need another starter. Without Schilling our starting rotation is a bit over average at best. I would love to dump Coco and pick up a starter.

kaycee | 02/24/08, 12:01 PM

and we want him back why ?

Coco doesnt want to be a backup to Ellsbury. He wants the starting job. Cant say as I blame him.

Not sure I understand this logic?

February 24, 2008  01:37 PM ET

Let's remember,... before Schilling turned up lame, it was planned for Buchholz to begin the season at Pawtucket. As a 5-man staff, perhaps they will be a little squeezed this year,.... the threat of an injury is always insideous. I bet Tavarez makes ten starts. Another decent starter wouldn't hurt. But RunItUp, I also feel that offensive output is going to be noticably better in '08, also. The only position player I see not doing as well in '08 as in '07 is Lowell,... and that's just because his '07 was so monsterous.

Saying a team wants to get pitching in a trade is like saying that the sun rises in the east and sets in the west. Don't think they are breaking any new ground here.

February 24, 2008  02:09 PM ET

I think he meant Ellsbury, KPKahder.

Or at least I hope he did.
He's saying that Ellsbury hits much better than Coco and plays some nice defense, so he's the odd man out with his hitting woes.
