Illini recruit kicked off team

Jereme Richmond, the top-rated sophomore in the state, has been kicked off the Waukegan basketball team after a second violation of the school's athletic code of conduct. Richmond's heated disagreement with Bulldogs coach Ron Ashlaw after a 57-55 overtime loss to Loyola on Thursday night resulted in Ashlaw asking Richmond to turn in his uniform. This was apparently the final straw after a series of arguments and problems with his star player. The 6-foot-6-inch Richmond is rated the No. 2 sophomore in the country by recruiting analyst Van Coleman and orally committed to Illinois as a freshman. He averaged 19.9 points and 9.5 rebounds.

Richmond should probably call the coach at USC and tell him he'll take over after Mayo leaves.

im hoping that jereme at least respects bruce and thinks high school and AAU is beneath him.. if not.. ****

Weber will have no qualms about this: he'll welcome the kid with open arms. He condoned - no, actually encouraged - that disgraceful display in Champaign when Indiana was in town. Weber is a dopey and classless person and the Illinois program is going down the tubes.

Shouldn't the kid at least go to his junior prom before he is taken this seriously????

February 24, 2008  05:14 PM ET

I hope he drops the Illini for someone else. If he already has an attitude problem Weber wont help him out. Their true colors showed during the Indiana game. Wanna thugs that are scrubs at basketball.

Son do you think that you are the second comeing or what. No one will kiss your butt they will kick it,in which you need. So now you are free to do what you like to do. You blew it.

Sorry if I upset someone about this little boy being kicked off the team. He needs to grow up. The world does not move around him. So who ever I upset get a life. We still have freedom of the press her. I did not swear nor used bad words I only stated he needs to grow up.

Good for Coach Ashlaw. Sounds like he knows what he wants and is taking charge and responsiblity for his school's team. Bet none of the other players will talk smack anytime soon.

You can't coach a team with such a distraction especially at the H.S. level. Most coaches are teachers and have enough to deal with outside of basketball. No way some punk who THINKS he's earned something because colleges are looking at him has the right to challenge his coach in front of players, fans, etc.

The last that I heard, Coach Weber still has a job and isn't facing NCAA sanctions (again), so the classless comment can go away. Illinois' conduct during the Indiana game wasn't anything to be proud of, but I've seen worse from better teams. As for Richmond, at this point in the season, there's little to be gained from kicking him off the team other than saving face. I agree with the coach for doing it (knock the primadonna down a peg), but this only gives the kid a reason to go to another school and make you burn for it. (kinda reminds me of Gordon)

February 25, 2008  12:16 PM ET

A lot of 15 year-olds have attitudes. I think the fact that he's 6'6" and 200 LBs makes people forget he's still a kid.

Now......the fact of the matter is that the boy needs to learn to respect authority figures......but, he's still young enough to do that.

Most of you guys need to ease up.

I'm sorry, Nineteen, but I'm not going to hold Weber accountable for the conduct of the fans at the last game, and I agree that it was in poor taste. Weber isn't a trash of a human being, he just isn't a premiere coach. And yes, neither team should be especially proud of itself. Now, for Richmond, I don't know what he was doing or what kind of coach Ashlaw is; it doesn't really matter. In all liklihood (SP?), They won't be on the same sideline next year and another coach will either see Richmond flourish, or will have an attitude on his hands. Ashlaw did what he felt was necessary and it will change the expectations for Richmond for the next several years.

Just remember folks: Indiana University defines the term "NO CLASS" for all time, or at least this century. Illinois fans just knew it before you did! Indiana blows! Go Illini!

Anyone who calls Bruce Weber "trash as a human being" obviously has no knowledge of Illinois basketball from a first-hand perspective. Thanks for defending Weber, JohnL.

I'm not defending the conduct of the fans that night since they clearly stepped over the line. I've heard a lot of inappropriate comments while sitting in C section in Assembly Hall. What happened during the Indiana game was different because it involved a group effort on the part of the fans; it wasn't just isolated R-rated commentary. With that said, we're seeing fans cross the line across college basketball, not just in Champaign.

Indiana already proved that they are a bunch of cheaters. Honestly what is with these Indiana fans calling Illinois classless? That is the most hypocritical thing I have ever heard. Indian only has Gordon because they cheated to get him. And the worst part of everything was that even after Sampson was forced to quit, the Indiana players all wrote his initials on their shoes, showing that they support a cheater. That right there is a pure trash program.

Indiana fans have no right at all calling illinois players thugs or whatever they are saying. Cheating is classless and Indiana are classless because they are cheaters. You can never get rid of the image of being a cheater, a few harsh chants from assembly hall crowd will soon be forgotten but hiring a coach that has been fired for breaking rules before to help get an instate recruit that has committed somewhere else is truly by all means classless. So go fly a kite Indiana fans and I hope you step in dog crap
