10:01 AM ET 01.19 | Word is that Thomas Vanek has become comfortable playing for the New York Islanders, but the ex-Gophers star, who can become a free agent after the season and resides near Stillwater, is still expected to end up with the Wild next season. Vanek, 29, who has 17 goals and 24 assists in 46 games, would seem a perfect fit for the Wild, who will have a $6 million salary slot with the departure of Dany Heatley. Vanek's 41 points would lead the Wild in scoring.

Will Thomas Vanek wind up with Wild?

They elected this guy so why the hell not?

That's what I thought too. I looked it up and he is a UFA after this season. I guess they are assuming that the Wild won't extend his contract. (chuckle, chuckle)

Vanek would actually be an upgrade compared to Heatly. Actually Matt Cooke is doing better than Heatly.

Not sure Vanek has that midwest charisma the Gopher State is looking for...Jesse I Ain't Got Time To Bleed Ventura, one of rasslin's all time greats.

Ric Flair will be the Governor of NC long before Vanek is elected to, well, anything.

Vanek: Born to be Wild.

Only if Parise or Suter go the other way. Nobody wants Heatley. Not even the Isles.

January 19, 2014  12:29 PM ET

Vanek will end up with the Wild and the Islanders will end up within squat for Matt Moulson and all those draft picks. Some things never change, at least the Islanders are consistent.

And that Heatley idiot still thinks he has the bargaining power to choose what team he's going to play for. With his stench fresh in the nostrils of half the NHL teams, maybe it's time for him to look at the KHL where he can be happy, happy with happy Kovalchuk.

Actually, anybody would be an upgrade to that poison.

January 19, 2014  12:36 PM ET

With most players their game gradually degrades over time due to age. Heatley was different, his game seemed to end with a sudden thud a few years ago, from 1st line star sniper to 4th line liability overnight. At least that's how I saw it. Weird, I wonder what happened?

It's the water. They better check the drinking water in Minnesota before elections. I'm sure somebody's messing with it. No other explanation.

Perfect headline, wish I'd written it.

My comment when the play for suter and Parise was that they'd have too much money tied up in a few players...and though getting Heatley off the books and adding Vanek is a considerable upgrade, they's probably be looking at something just short of 30 million in cap space locked up in three players...that's problematic.

Amazing isn't it? The ego of these athletes.
