Will Josh Freeman benefit from Norv Turner's offense?

10:03 AM ET 01.19 | Now that Norv Turner apparently is headed to the Vikings as offensive coordinator, the team has to find a quarterback who can throw the ball down the field. Turner prefers a vertical passing attack with a power running game. That would be contrary to what the Vikings ran under offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave when Leslie Frazier was coach. In contrast to the West Coast offense, Turner prefers an offense with a dropback QB. That will mean even free-agent QB Josh Freeman will have a better chance of returning to the Vikings than Christian Ponder, despite Ponder's guaranteed $1.8 million contract for next season. The future of Matt Cassel, who finished the season as the Vikings' starting QB, remains unclear. A possibility is that he might remain for a one-year stopgap season.

Cassel's the only one I'd keep in that group.

.....and maybe they draft a QB, and Cassel & Freeman walk?

January 19, 2014  10:17 AM ET

Poor Vikings!

January 19, 2014  10:24 AM ET

Finally getting good coaches, but still no QB.

January 19, 2014  10:38 AM ET

The behind scenes talk indicated that Freeman was late for meetings which is why he did not get a second start. If that is true, and he still has attitude issues, then I can't see the Vikings keeping him.

Weren't there snitches from unnamed "teammates" about Freeman a little while ago? They seemed to come from O players. No matter how clean he is, how's Freeman supposed to lead with such dissension at his back? (And I do mean AP.)

January 19, 2014  10:48 AM ET

The chances the Viking re-sign Freeman are slim and none....and slim just walk out the door.

Not really. It's always "Miller time" somewhere on the globe.

Decide between Freeman or Cassel one stays..one goes.....draft a QB......and keep Ponder as your backup just for the fact he's a change of pace type who can run .....

<thinks of wife's glare if I crack one at 9:15 in the morning>

I'll wait until pregame, if I know what's good for me. My couch isn't that comfortable.

I'm lucky. My wife sleeps in late on the weekends.

Pregame has already started on NFLN.

Why is everyone so enamored with Norv and his 1970's, 80's "vertical passing game"?

Because his offenses are consistently in the top 5 when he's an OC.

Living in the past? Only time will tell how the Viking offense does next year. But not so hot would be my guess.

Because it works?

Think of it this way....

Who would you rather have as OC, Bill Musgrave or Norv Turner.

No-brainer.
