Cubs willing to give Tanaka $25M per

07:52 AM ET 01.20 | Over the weekend in Chicago, during a Cubs convention, the club managed to talk very little about the man who seems to be creating the most buzz these days: Japanese free-agent pitcher Masahiro Tanaka. One report out of Japan said five teams including the Cubs, White Sox, Yankees, Dodgers and Diamondbacks all submitted offers. That much we could have figured out from the beginning, as only the Yankees of those four teams have not spoken publicly about Tanaka in some capacity as of late. But we know they want him. Going into the weekend one major league source told ESPNChicago.com that the Cubs were willing to go as high as $25 million per year for between 6-8 years. Another source indicated the years were right but the price was lower. Both agreed the Yankees would be the stiffest competition.

That just might be true. It's amazing what a hot commodity those super secret Texas Rangers Decoder Rings are in Japan.

I see stupidmoron is giving us his usual pithy fare this morning.

Looks like it's going to cost the Yankees a little more than they thought.

Not so sure about that. If they would not cross their line for Cano then why for Tanaka? The Dodgers are the team more likely to play the I will see you and raise you game.

Any team that gives him $25M per is crazy.
Back in the sane world - how about hose games yesterday.

FWIW, Tanaka is younger...but also has most likely had his arm severely abused in Japan.
I think there was a lot more than just ballplayer value at work in the way the Yanks handled the Cano situation, seems to me that they other reasons why they weren't sad to see him go (not saying they were good or bad reasons).

The Cubs will keep drawing fans with or without Tanaka, he will not make the difference in the Cubs making the playoffs this year or several years down the road. My question to management is why pay a unproven pitcher in the major leagues 25 mill a year and be the highest paid player on the team that could lead to turmoil between Cub players?

True. Cano was more than just about money. If Theo is willing to go overboard to pay the guy then it would scare me off a little. His recent history is not good.

Look, that is proven stud pitcher money and years. You would think any team would rather wait a year and throw that at a few of the SPs set to hit the market in 2015.

I bet this ticks off Darvish a little. He must be thinking " daauum , I came out a year too soon."
