07:38 AM ET 01.22 | With an eye on the future, the Phillies brought back a bit of their past in veteran Bobby Abreu, who was inked to a minor-league deal. Abreu, who turns 40 in March, will get a chance to win a job with the big club in spring training. Abreu spent nine of his 17 major-league seasons with the Phillies before sitting out last season. He resumed his career this winter in the Venezuelan league and the Phillies liked enough of what they saw to bring him to Clearwater for a spring look-see. "The purpose of this signing is to see if he has anything left," GM Ruben Amaro Jr. said. "We have seen him in the Venezuelan league, he is swinging the bat well. He's in shape and he's clearly motivated to play. If he performs and makes the team, great. If he doesn't perform we have no obligation. But he'll get every opportunity to make the club."
