Oilers institutionalize a lack of toughness

07:52 AM ET 01.22 | It seems Vancouver winger Zack Kassian had the last laugh again. [Kassian] waltzed into Rexall Place after having carelessly busted Oiler Sam Gagner's jaw with his stick in a preseason game on Sept. 21, and then openly mocked Gagner's plight in Vancouver on Dec. 13 in a Vancouver rematch. Kassian would finish Tuesday's game with the winning goal, and in need of neither ice bag nor hot tub. ... After years and years of players like Kassian taking out Oilers players with impunity and then rolling through town like a visit from the Queen, it has become acceptable in Edmonton, it seems. OK then. ... [The Oilers] have lost 37 of their 53 starts this season, yet taking an ill-timed minor penalty is still of greater concern in Edmonton than showing an opponent that you aren't going to be a pushover anymore.

Huh?

Yakupov vs Schultz?

Lack of toughness on the ice -- lack of common sense in management.

January 22, 2014  09:32 AM ET

whew....

January 22, 2014  09:50 AM ET

showing the team you`re not going to be ap ushover anymore? They`re in the basement of the league...again. They haven`t made the playoffs in 8 years.

THAT is the very definition of being a pushover.

A hen house without a rooster.

Got to start at the top. Craig Mactavish is good, Eakins will fill a good role-but will need to replace him once he's taken them to the playoffs because he won't bring out the 6th gear on anybody.
Then there is the problem of finding a star player willing to show toughness and grit. A player who will pays his dues in corners and back other teammates up. I don't think fighting will be a part of hockey for much longer but I do think there are many ways besides scoring goals and assisting them that a player can earn respect both on and off the ice.
Oilers have yet to find an adult on their team.

Agreed. Gonna take some doing to correct the mess created first, by Kevin Lowe and then followed up by Timid Tambi. Other than drafting Nelly Yakupova (where he was overruled by the Owner), MacT is on the right track in trying to right this awful bunch by drafting grit and size but, it's going to take a while to develop those. He's not in a position of strength when it comes to trades, and everybody knows it. The best he can do is sit tight, develop the assets in your system, keep drafting size and toughness and get what you can (draft picks?) for the likes of Sam Gagner, Hemsky, Nick Schultz, Ryan Jones, Ryan Smyth, Corey Potter and Nelly Yakupova.

It seems the Oilers collectively embraced the idea that it's a mortal sin to throw a body-check. No one, from top to bottom, finishes their check. No one takes the body. I see no heart, no pride anywhere in that line up. They just accept losing so lightly. They look like a bunch of mediocre figure skaters who're forced into playing hockey in their spare time and can hardly wait to get back to figure skating.

What a sorry spectacle for a once proud organization. Yet Kevin Lowe remains at the helm! Unbelievable!

Yep. Don't know why. Nostalgia? Curiosity? Sucker for punishment? Not sure. Guess I want to see for myself how bad this gutless bunch can get. Depressing, isn't it?

The only way the fanbase will give MacT time is if Lowe is out of the picture. The locals are out for blood and want him gone. A recent public letter put out by Katz defending Lowe and saying the team was going in the right direction was to say the least not well taken. Season ticket holders just recieved notification that it is time to renew. I didn't think this would happen but ticket holders are saying if you me get rid of Lowe.

Watching what they do off the ice will be more interesting then watching what they do on it.
