07:33 AM ET 01.23 | Some backcourt depth may be on the way for the Lakers -- and not just any old depth. Kobe Bryant, who told reporters in Boston last week that his injured left knee will be re-evaluated sometime in early February, actually will be examined Jan. 27 or Jan. 28 in Los Angeles, once the Lakers return from their seven-game trip, according to the team. Bryant, sidelined since Dec. 17 with a fracture of the lateral tibial plateau in his left knee, has played in just six games this season. ... While Bryant won't be playing until next week at the earliest, Xavier Henry could play as soon as Sunday against the New York Knicks, barring setbacks. Henry, who has been out of the lineup since Dec. 29 with a bone bruise in his right knee, practiced with the team in Miami on Wednesday.

Makes no difference...Lakers still suck

January 23, 2014  08:34 AM ET

not sure what he is trying to prove.
it is STUPID to try and come back early from a fracture in your knee

if the lakers were smart they'd keep him shut down til at least the AS break

He's trying to prove everybody wrong like always. This is no exception and he is coming back earlier than predicted.

In your face Kobe haters and doubters!

Shut It Down, Bro.

Great reason to come back and jack up shots. Old man needs a little under 7,000 to pass Kareem...

He's trying to get back on the court to continue his pursuit of passing MJ's scoring mark and moving himself further up the list to no. 1. That's all it is.

they put up a better fight than those knicks though.....

The Lakers were flat out stupid to resign Kobe to that contract.

So, they will have 6 ping-pong balls instead of 7?Lmao...I get being the anti-Derrick Rose. But, this does not help the Lakers...at all. They have ZERO chance of even making the playoffs and he would be risking an awful lot for very little gain.If he rushes back and gets re-injured, the Lakers are on the hook for 48mil and in the toilet until his deal ends.If he's FANTASTIC and helps them win a few extra games, it would be the difference between getting Wiggins/Parker/Embiid and Glenn Rice III, TJ Warren and Cauley-Stein.Not seeing the benefit in this. But, the man has earned the right to go out on his own terms...even if it's not in the Lakers best interests.

agree with everything but the last part

it still is about the team...it should always be about the team
if he can't understand that him resting and coming back as close
to whatever his new 100% will be?
then he forfeits his 'earned rights' (imo)

He is selfish. Here's his chance to help himself and the team by letting them suck so they could get a high pick but it's all about himself...smh

I don't know...I view everything in a paramilitary way.Longevity + accomplishments = RespectAgain, I hate this Team and it gives me tummy rumblings when I defend him. But, he has a right to decide how he goes out. It's his career and it's his knee. With that being said, the Lakers have a right to protect their brand. So, they are well within their rights to tell him you are shutdown for heretofore. Sadly, there isn't anyone in that franchise with the Juice, nor the STONES, to give Mamba that type of directive.Jerry Buss could.Phil Jackson Could.Jerry West Could.Trigger Mike and Bussboy cannot.

Not saying they should 'disrespect' him, like playing him at the end of the game when they are down 40.
But how much more 'respect' can they give him after giving him a monster contract coming off an achilles injury?
it is time for him to now do what's best for the team and do whats best that he can actually fulfil the contract and not turn into an amare-albatross

Not saying shut it completely down for the rest of the season.
but IMPORTANT bones that attach to your knee.....take a solid 2 months to heal. I don't want to hear about his amazing healing ability, blah, blah, blah
he's only 5-6 weeks out.
there is NO reason to allow him to come back before he is 100% healed
