07:35 AM ET 01.23 | Even if a deal with Tyler Colvin has hit a snag, Baltimore may not be done yet. The Orioles have money to spend -- perhaps as much as $17 million for this upcoming season -- and are still looking to do so, according to the club's top executive. Japanese right-hander Masahiro Tanaka signed a seven-year, $155 million deal with the New York Yankees on Wednesday, as the free agent market appeared to open for a second act. The ongoing negotiations with Tanaka -- which did not include the Orioles, who never agreed to pay the $20 million posting fee to talk with him -- seemingly had held free agency hostage after a flurry of activity in early December. "The market was frozen for a while," said Orioles executive vice president Dan Duquette. "But things are starting to move again."

Angelos dug some bucks out of the box marked "Tobacco Settlement".

I think Duquette has been frozen for awhile.

Fernando Rodney. Bronson Arroyo. Those two guys could probably be had for something in the neighborhood of $17 mil, and the pitching staff would be better.

I would be very careful with Rodney. His 2013 was nothing like his insane 2012. And when you look at his career, you have to figure 2012 was a one off and won't happen again.

QUOTE(#6):

They don't need Fernando Rodney. That's a couple two three million poorly spent on a 37 year old closer who's had one good year and has been otherwise pedestrian or worse. They have Darren O'day under contract for that money and he'll close for them. He's a much better reliever and he's right in their living room. Some real moron would have to make the decision for the O's to sign Rodney.

The scary thing about O'Day is that he's vulnerable to lefty hitters as a submarining righty (they've slugged .433 against him for his career as opposed to .290 [!] for righties). Quisenberry showed that such a pitcher can be a good closer, but he has to be used intelligently (for example, Dick Howser tried to make sure Dan had to pitch to Al Oliver).
That said, I wouldn't want any part of Rodney...look at his results from 2007-11.

the guy can't even wear his cap right, just not the right guy for this team. Arroyo would be a decent fit, nothing spectacular but an innings eater who takes the ball every 5th day.

I'm pretty sure Quisenberry did pitch to Oliver, they played against each other in the same division for 3 years, surely they faced each other during that span that covered at least 54 games

$17 million will buy a lot of Boog's Ribs. It'll have to do seeing as the cream of the crop free agents are pretty much gone.
