07:32 AM ET 01.24 | Fans in and around Boston now have reason to fall in love just little deeper with Red Sox pitcher Jon Lester. [Lester], who is eligible for free agency after the 2014 season, emphatically stated Thursday that his desire is to remain with Boston, and he expressed a willingness to take a discount in order to do so. "These guys are my No. 1 priority," Lester said during media availability at the Boston Baseball Writers' Association of America awards dinner. "I want to be here 'til they rip this jersey off my back." Lester said he not only expects to have to take a discount in order to sign an extension with the team, but he is willing to do so. "It's like Pedey [Dustin Pedroia, Red Sox second baseman]. He left a lot of money on the table to stay here. That's what he wanted to do. I understand that."

Let's hope Jon's and Ben's idea of a home town deal is in the same ballpark.
This would be a great move for the Sox!

Refreshing.

Given that Boston is such a nasty city and the fanbase is made up entirely of ungrateful, obnoxious jerks, it's strange that players are eager to stay here and are willing to leave bucks on the table to do so.

OK, call his bluff and send him over a contract at $10 million a year and see if he signs it. Great PR and total BS. What he is really saying is " Come close and I will sign it."

January 24, 2014  09:16 AM ET

"But just like they want it to be fair for them, I want it to be fair for me and my family."

Who knew? He will demand market price come payday.

We shall see. but let's take a look back at that deal: "The eight-year deal is worth $110 million, according to a source, making Dustin Pedroia baseball???s highest-paid second baseman."

He was the highest paid second basemen at the time of the signing. could he have received more in FA? Most likely. Did he take some huge discount? No.

Actually he was the sixth highest paid 2B last year.

Based on total guaranteed money due him he was first. First second baseman to break the $100 million mark.

It was an EXTENSION of his contract. 8 years $110 million. If you want to add in lastyears old number then fine. It is a $120 million deal. The Red Sox had little choice and it was good for both parties. They get a heck of a player for fair money and the player gets paid fair money until he is 38.

Make this happen. Lester should not be paid like Kershaw, because he's not his equal. But, he should be paid well, and will be.

something should have to be done in the positive way,,,,i should say though!!
