Is Dwight Howard losing popularity?

08:58 AM ET 01.25 | In 2009, Dwight Howard -- not Kobe Bryant, not LeBron James, not Dwyane Wade -- became the first player in All-Star fan balloting history to crack 3 million votes. The affable, smiling and downright dominant Howard -- Superman! -- was the most popular player in the NBA. Six years, multiple changes of mind and two teams later, an image-tattered Howard received 653,318 votes. He will surely make his eighth consecutive All-Star team (assuming the Western Conference coaches rightly select him as one of seven reserves). He will not, however, start the game for the first time since his All-Star debut in 2007 when Shaquille O'Neal still ruled the roost in the East with the Miami Heat. These days, O'Neal leads his TNT cohorts in dog-piling the Houston Rockets big man.

No doubt the Dwightmare hurt his popularity.

Forget popularity, how about consistency? Harden and Howard stunk up last night against the Grizz.

Point is, they removed the center position from the ballot (to more closely match today's game). So, instead of competing against a bunch of no-names, he now has to compete against real athletes in the forward category. He may be the most popular center, but he is not one of the three most popular frontcourt players in the West. Added to that, he hasn't been playing better than all but two frontcourt players in the West. Toss in the Dwightmare for seasoning, and you have the perfect dish--more competitive category for fans, more competitive category in performance, and even a slight down-turn in popularity signals "at best you take the bench in the All-Star game."

"Is Dwight Howard losing popularity?"...

Win a title. It did wonders for LeBron!

January 25, 2014  07:33 PM ET

I am pretty sure that Howard won't win "Man of the Year" in Orlando or LA???

Living on Hershey bars and the silly movie shticks just make him to be such a dope. Declining skills don't help either.

Exactly. Wamu's comment was simply dumb.

Well, it is Wamu, after all.
