09:18 AM ET 01.25 | Count Red Sox owner Larry Lucchino among those not shocked about the Yankees opening their wallet this offseason. "It's like 'Back to the Future,' is my sense," Lucchino said, according to ESPN Boston. "I've seen this movie before." This version includes the addition of Masahiro Tanaka, Carlos Beltran and Brian McCann, as well as the signing of Jacoby Ellsbury away from the Red Sox. It was all part of a spending spree that included more than $500 million worth of contracts, blowing away what their reaction to the previous time they missed the playoffs, when, in 2008, they brought in CC Sabathia, Mark Teixeira and A.J. Burnett. "Different players," Lucchino said. "I understand that. You can't just go into the grocery store and buy exactly what you need to win. A lot of other things go into it as well: Luck, injuries, and all of that. Suffice to say, we won't have any problem rekindling the rivalry with the Yankees."

But Larry, they did win in 2009. So yes you can.

There really was no choice but to try.
That is unless you want to put that sorry team from last year back on the field. Attendance was down, YES network ratings down and the farm system had no viable options to change the landscape this year. Or who knows when?

What is up with that Yankee farm system? Ever since they struck gold in the late 90's, Cano is really the only great player they've produced, unless I'm missing someone.

NO, you did not miss much. Austin Jackson was traded for Granderson. Ian Kennedy was part of that trade. Hughes and Chamberlain had short success, but were big parts of the 2009 WS.
Nova may yet be a very good pticher and has been at times. robertson, we shall see how he closes. Gardener is not much to show for positional players.

I like to think it is getting better but until any of those " prospects" show it at the big league level then that is that.

Agreed. The Yankees made lots of purchases, but it remains to be seen how the pieces will fit together. The bullpen is still questionable, the rotation is solid but not spectacular, and the infield is still an island of misfit toys and injury questions. But, hey, I guess Atro thinks Derek Jeter will play like he did 15 years ago.

IF Girardi has any cubes, he will pull Jeter in late innings any game he has a lead in. That is the right thing to do. Nobody will miss Cano more than Jeter. Cano handled more ground balls on the SS side of 2B than any 2B in the history of the game. Jeter was playing Rover , not SS in 2012.

Ah. I see the Atro love is out in full force this morning.

And, we all know what the answer should be.Atro's reply:The nice thing about you is when you don't know much, you make sure everyone knows it.You gotta love people who make asinine comments in an attempt to mock others. Your boy atro seems to think that the Yankees would be better off with Jeter at SS than Drew.

His boy Atro appears to have crawled up into your head and cleared a campsite.

Still that's an awful short list which covers over a decade. I would think who ever is in charge of scouting or player development would have a lot of explaining to do.

You would think so. Cashman said a few months ago that they were going to change up what they were looking for in draft picks. Well, that took long enough..

2015 will be a much better year for Yankee prospects. All of their major talent is in A ball or soon to be AA. Unless Banuelos can get healthy, that will pretty much leave them with Nunez for this year.
