07:41 AM ET 01.27 | In the eyes of just about everyone, that big contract Bryan Bickell signed over the summer has not added up, and he's now paying for it with his own dip in icetime. Bickell, who has two goals and one assist in 17 games since returning from a left knee injury in mid-December, was a healthy scratch for the Hawks against the Jets on Sunday night at the United Center. "We need more," coach Joel Quenneville said of benching Bickell. "We need a lot more. We're looking for more." Michael Kostka moved from defense to wing on a line with Kris Versteeg and center Michal Handzus to replace Bickell, who has seven goals and two assists in 39 games this season.

this has buyout written all over it...but the organization screwed up big time, he got that contract based on the playoffs alone. Anytime you go from 540,000 to 4 million annually, you are bound to get complacent.

And for all the times it's happened, no one learns anything and it KEEPS happening.
"Big Bad Bruin" is right. I remember after John Druce torched the Rangers, etc. in the playoffs, LA Kings signed him for a lot of $.....

I find it odd that Chicago had no problem jettisoning half their team after the first Cup, but couldn't resist handing this guy a big deal for one good post-season in a lockout-shortened year. Strange decision-making.

I hadn't considered that before, but you have a good point. What were they ingesting when they thought they absolutely had to sign him?

January 27, 2014  10:41 AM ET

Considering how all the other Hawks are scoring, maybe he can't get his stick on the puck enough.

January 27, 2014  11:10 AM ET

Reminds me of Franzen a bit. However, Franzen has produced in the playoffs a number of times after his ho-hum regular seasons. Hawks will have to see if he produces again in the playoffs. A lot of Wings fans think the Franzen contract was awful, but I still think it was worth it for what he's done in the playoffs.

At least Boland could play. This big ogre is useless. Best thing he can do for his team is to stop trying to be Patrick Kane with the puck and plant his big butt in the goalie's face.

They though he'd be Big Buff 2.0 for less money. Not!

LOL. The ''Holy crap I forgot we had a noon game.'' look.

QUOTE(#4):

and he's now paying for it with his own dip in icetime.Yeah, but the Hawks are paying for it with currency and that hurts a lot more I bet.

Not for making the playoffs, just extra overpaid weight at this point. They can cry like every other team......look at Edmonton.....loaded with talent and no defence sense, or chemistry on the defensive.

January 27, 2014  07:23 PM ET

Stan and Joel and Rocky could be just about completely lost without Scotty. A team with their record would be a lot smarter just to suggest to Mr Bickells that he start straightening out some goofs for even looking at his team-mates and let the rest just happen. His scoring should take place when someone caroms one in off his butt while he's laying out one or two of the other team's defencemen. Could have used him bigtime against Wpg - too bad, eh.
