07:34 AM ET 01.27 | In the past week, the market has seen Masahiro Tanaka and Matt Garza's names come off the board, and that shines a light on free agent righty Ervin Santana. [Santana] is drawing interest from eight teams including the Rockies, Orioles, Mariners, Yankees and Dodgers, according to a source with direct knowledge of the situation. The Marlins and Cubs also recently inquired about him, but their interest does not appear to be too serious at this time. ... [Santana's] market is expected to heat up in the near future, with league sources speculating that teams like the Blue Jays, Diamondbacks, Royals and Tigers could become involved. Things have been quiet on the Santana front since Thursday, and sources caution that it is "still early" in the process.

Eight is enough....

Where's the obligatory NYY's, BOS threads.... or Tanaka... or oh,,,,,, nevermind.....

Some team will push the panic button and over pay for at best just above a career 500 pitcher.

He will cost a draft pick and apparently that matters to teams. WHY would the Cubs give up the 4th pick in the 2014 amateur draft for Santana and pay him big bucks besides? The Marlins the 2nd pick for this guy?

No no and no. Unless I have something wrong, and I do not think I do. If so tell me.

The top 10 picks are protected. The Cubs and Marlins would give up their 2nd round pick.

I believe the Yankees are going to sign every remaining free agent, and work it all out in the spring.

Thanks. confusing system to me at times. Much appreciated.

I see the Yankees going after Santana, that's Johan rather than Ervin!

January 27, 2014  10:16 AM ET

This guy has had a very erratic career. He's been all over the place. He's had terrible seasons, mediocre seasons and good seasons. I wouldn't trust him to be anything more than a #4 or #5 starter.

I think the top 10 picks are protected in which case they would lose their second rounder.

Ah, yes. It would probably help to read all comments before responding.

It concerns me that Santana is on the Yanks' radar which seems to imply that minor league assistance isn't coming anytime soon.

Of course, this could also just be Santana's agent stirring the pot.

Ervin Santana loves to play one good year then the next year likely will be played very poor,
that's one of the biggest reasons why teams shouldn't pay him like a elite pitcher,
Santana is by far very incomssistent when playing as a starter that is something where Santana will need to work very hard!!

no team should pay him like a star pitcher rather the teams should avoid long term contract w/Santana always!!
