Marinelli: Lions won't trade Williams

Coach Rod Marinelli is keeping an eye on the Lions veterans while scouting talent for the upcoming draft. The offseason involves speculation and manipulation of the roster, and the main focus has been on Jon Kitna, Roy Williams and Shaun Rogers. Marinelli has no plans to trade Williams, despite speculation. Marinelli envisions Williams and Calvin Johnson, the Lions' first-round draft pick last year, as a dominating receiving tandem. Marinelli was forceful in answering when asked if Williams will be traded. "No," Marinelli said. "I know the rumors that are out. Those two guys together, I want to see those guys where they can really impact a game. They are special."

The question now is which reciever will Matt Millen take with this year's first round pick ...

February 25, 2008  07:12 AM ET

Tough to get the ball to receivers when the O-Line is swiss cheese...

February 25, 2008  08:06 AM ET

He's right they could could soon be the best tandem in the game. Other things have to fall into place first though.

February 25, 2008  08:12 AM ET

The worst thing that happened to the Lions was winning a few games last year... it bought Millen more years...

February 25, 2008  08:46 AM ET

Matt Millen is the worst GM I have ever seen. How does this guy keep his job?

February 25, 2008  09:11 AM ET

It's nice to hear a smart man like Coach Marinelli have no desire to trade Williams, but he's not GM. The only way trading Williams would be justified is if we got either help in the secondary, offensive line, or a good draft pick, like top 10

February 25, 2008  09:37 AM ET

Wait until after this season when Williams leaves town and we are stuck with nothing in return. It is no secret that Williams is tired of the Lions and wants out. This is just another mistake on the long list of many the Lions continue to make. Instead of being smart and treating the team like a business they continue to think wishful thoughts and that everything will be great in the end.

February 25, 2008  09:59 AM ET

It would just be stupid to trade away Williams.Lions need a threat on both sides of the field if they are going to try and compete.

For the love of sports, Fire Millen and take that high school junior varsity football coach Rod "Pound the Rock" Marinelli with you. Every other GM in the NFL is salivating at the prospect of making a trade with that moron Millen.

February 25, 2008  12:22 PM ET

Your going to have to trade him if you are going to draft another wide receiver in the draft. Sooner or later you are going to have to many!!

February 25, 2008  01:25 PM ET

they might take something else like a QB possible but another WR is possible

February 25, 2008  01:49 PM ET

I wholeheartedly recommend a QB. Jon Kitna ain't the future for anybody but his wife.

I agree...

If I am a GM and Millen asks for a trade, I take it no matter what. Given Millens track recod, it is guaranteed to be in my favor in the long run...

February 25, 2008  04:00 PM ET

They would be fools to trade Roy Williams.

However, if they do then I say come to Gang Green. He and I were born the same exact day so I'm a big fan of the dude.

February 25, 2008  05:46 PM ET

Andre Woodson, quick fast & in a hurry. This is an organization that has a history of making bad personnel decisions before the Millen era started. From drafting Andre Ware, to not getting Bary Sanders the type of O-line that Emmitt had in Dallas, to giving Scott Michell all that money, only to lose his job to Charlie Batch, etc...The Lions are just continuing a tradition.

February 25, 2008  05:46 PM ET

Barry, excuse me.

February 25, 2008  05:47 PM ET

Mitchell, excuse me.

February 25, 2008  06:27 PM ET

Mr. Beepo & bimanator,
You two are morons. Detroit threw the ball 3rd or 4th most in the NFL last year, much less than they ran it. Secondly, Marinelli was not calling the plays. The overrated and destructive Mike Martz was the offensive coordinator. Don't blame Marinelli, he's given very limited power and all he did was win more games than any Lions couch in what 5, 6 years?

Williams is a stud, but you can't blame him for wanting to win. If they got a team together this year that could atleast be respected and looking like they are actually improving he might stay.

February 26, 2008  02:21 AM ET

I hope this is the year where Roy Williams just plays the game and keeps his mouth shut off of it. Tip the pizza guy, and don't celebrate a first down when you are getting blown out. And please, no more proclamations about how many points you "could" have scored.

I also wish the Lions would have waited a year to draft a QB instead of drafting Drew Stanton. He will end up being the white version of Charlie Batch - never finishing a season.
