07:47 AM ET 01.28 | When the Red Wings play the Flyers in Philly on Tuesday, they will do so without star forwards Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg. Zetterberg was a late scratch for Sunday's game against the Florida Panthers, and general manager Ken Holland confirmed to The News that Zetterberg will not make the trip to Philadelphia. Zetterberg has a reoccurence of back problems -- he missed 11 games in December with issues -- but the severity of this problem, and whether it's related to the previous problems, remains to be seen. Zetterberg took two big hits in Friday's victory over Montreal which could have triggered new issues. Datsyuk last played in the Winter Classic on Jan. 1 and has been out since with a lower-body injury.

I'm starting to wonder if the Wings need to call up the Grand Rapids training staff too.

Gotta be worried if you are a DET fan. Team has 7 players signed beyond next season, and the article names 2 of them.

Since you asked, the other 5 are: Weiss, Franzen, Helm, Abdelkader and Miller. Yikes.

Water is better in Auburn Hills. Most of the fans are in the suburbs anyway. The Palace awaits.

I wonder how many could be playing now if they didn't have the Olympics in front of them.

To clarify, this is their forwards only.

I've wondered that too. I've also wondered if some of these guys are "injured" to circumvent the roster cap and salary cap.

Though the Olympics might help in the 'rest-up" dept.

That only happens when they're placed on LTIR, and right now only Weiss is.

27 players are on the 23-limit roster at the moment; and that's after waiving Samuelsson.

Throughout the season DeKeyser, Helm, Eaves and Zetterberg have all taken turns on LTIR in addition to Weiss.

Not for Dats and Z, Olympic team captains.

Doesn't matter if they were on LTIR before. They are counting against the cap now. Only Weiss' salary is currently not counting against it.

My point is... those previous LTIR stints actually helped the Wings stay under the cap throughout the season while they juggle their surplus of forwards. And Weiss' current stint is definitely helping stay under the cap.

In fact, it's starting to look like Weiss might be a buyout or trade candidate after the season as Riley Sheahan and Luke Glendening have found useful and productive roles in the Wings lineup, something Weiss couldn't do.

And Jurco and Tartar, fun to watch, and they can score. Let the kids play, the same guys get hurt year after year, you can't count on them anymore.

No kidding. Without Big "Z" and Dats healthy and playing, we're screwed. Kids are doing great but, as we found out the other night, nothing beats veteran wisdom and know-how to hold on to a lead late in the 3rd period.

That has really worked for the Penguins. At the start of the season they were bumping up against the cap. Now they have about $5 million to play with.

Dats and Zetterberg are starting to get up there. I don't think they're over the hill yet, but they are at the age when it takes longer for the body to heal.

A truly elite Johnny Quick type goalie on this team would cure all ills

Agree. That line with Sheahan has been their most effective line, similar to last year's young gun line.

Again, let's hope Holland swallows his loyalty and lets the aged UFAs walk in June in favor of importing some of these young energetic guys permanently into the lineup.
